I was jolted awake,jumped up,and all my drowsiness vanished!
I made a shushing gesture at Lily and slowly pressed my ear against the window.
It was dead quiet!
I looked at Lily.Her face was pale and full of fear.
I held her hand tightly,trying to soothe her cold and trembling hand.I patted my chest to indicate that I was here and told her not to be afraid.
Then,I reached out to open the window.
"Don't!"
Lily whispered in a low voice,stopping me.She shook her head vigorously at me.
After calming her down for a while,I gently broke free from her hand,took out the Swiss Army knife from my backpack beside me,waved it in front of her,and reached out to the window again.
If we didn't figure out what was going on,there would always be a thorn in Lily's heart,and mine too.
My hand rested on the window.I took a deep breath and suddenly pushed the window open.
"Ah!"
There was a scream,followed by the sound of someone falling.
It was Tom.
He looked at me,got up from the ground,ran towards the low wall,and tried to crawl through a dog hole.
"What happened?"
Lily leaned out of the window nervously.First,she saw the flowers scattered on the ground.Then,following the direction I pointed,she saw Tom,who was stuck in the dog hole and struggling helplessly.
"Go and save him!"
I pulled Tom out of the dog hole.After making sure he had no injuries,I let out a sigh of relief and asked him softly what he was doing.
Tom lowered his head and didn't say a word.
But his eyes were clumsily stealing glances at Lily.
Lily waved at him,and without hesitation,he ran over,hugged her leg,and pressed his face against her.
I was startled and was about to pull him away,but Lily shook her head at me.
Lily squatted down to face him.
"Tell sister,what were you doing so late at night?"
Tom pointed at the flowers scattered by the window and then at Lily.
"For me?"
Tom grinned and nodded vigorously.
Lily happily hugged him and then asked again.
"Why did you get into my bed last night?"
"Playing hide-and-seek."
Tom blurted out and then lowered his head.
Seeing this,Lily hugged him again,whispered in his ear,and Tom's expression gradually relaxed.
He imitated Lily and whispered something in her ear.
Lily's face changed slightly.She waved at me and repeated Tom's words softly.
"Let's play hide-and-seek together."
"Once we're well hidden,he won't be able to catch us."
Won't be able to catch us?
Shouldn't it be"won't be able to find us"?
Besides,who was"he"?
Was it the village chief?
I gave Lily a meaningful look.Lily understood and took Tom's hand,asking softly,
"Who were you playing hide-and-seek with?"
Tom suddenly pulled his hand away and hugged Lily's leg even tighter,pressing his whole face against her.
Lily looked at me and shook her head.After gently comforting him again,she asked softly,
"Tom is a good boy.Can you tell sister,please?"
"Who were you playing hide-and-seek with?"
This time,Tom looked at Lily.After hesitating for a while,he pursed his lips and stubbornly shook his head.
"Can't say."
"Why can't you say?If you tell me,sister will play with you,okay?"
Tom lowered his head.Lily gently hugged him and coaxed him tenderly.
Tom finally raised his head,looked at Lily,pursed his lips,and was about to speak.
"Tom,why did you run here?"
The village chief,carrying a kerosene lamp,rushed over in a hurry.
Tom lowered his head,pursed his lips,and stopped talking.
The village chief apologized to us and then took Tom's hand and left.
When they reached the gate of the yard,Tom suddenly broke free from the village chief's hand,ran towards Lily,hugged her leg,and pressed his face tightly against her stomach.
Lily was slightly taken aback.
Even after the village chief led Tom away,Lily still stared blankly in the direction they had left.
I kindly advise her that Tom was just a child and she didn't need to care about his affectionate behavior
Lily looked at me with a pale face.
"He called me mom..."
