She studied Dr.Mason curiously.
I floated in front, trying to shield him from her vile gaze.
"I knocked forever,no answer, and I had no key, so I waited for a while. Why didn’t you stay in the car like agreed."Daniel's tone softened instantly.
Seeing their lovey-dovey act, I felt like I was gonna throw up.
"Forget my stuffThis guy's relentless."I grumbled to Dr.Mason.
Dr.Mason coldly scanned Daniel and Emily.
"The key's here.Take what you want and get out."
"Don't let me ever see you again."
Emily opened her mouth, but Daniel pulled her back, silent, his face dark.
I floated beside Dr.Mason, nodding in approval.
"Don't show your disgusting face again,Daniel."
"Do something decent for once.I'm dead, and you still torment me."
"You think I loved you for fifteen years, but now you fear the child wasn't yours?Your love's more worthless even than your pride in front of Emily."
After Daniel left,Dr.Mason placed my belongings in the house.
"An empty room, nothing left.Daniel's a jerk, making you suffer like this."
Dr.Mason collapsed on the sofa,sobbing.
"If only Ihad met you sooner.I thought you and Daniel were happy."
He punched the sofa repeatedly.
I floated beside him, trying to hug and comfort him, trying to tell him I was fine.
He couldn't see me.
I stopped floating and sat gently beside him.
"I'm okay.It's over.I’m dead now—iwhat happened was already a lifetime ago."
Dr.Mason's sobs paused,as if he had heard me.
I waved my transparent hand before his eyes, curious.
His gaze passed through,unchanged.
"Sarah, did you really want to give him the key?"he asked the air.
I nodded, looking at my increasingly transparent toes.
I didn't see the spark in his eyes after my gesture.
A week after my death he received a letter I had left him, asking him to return the house key to Daniel.
"His stuff disgusts me."
"I have no one left.My parents are gone. Before I died,I only had Daniel."
"Now I'm dead,I want nothing to do with him."
"He’s just disgusting."
Though Dr.Mason couldn't hear,I kept talking.
He clutched the key, saying,"I saw him and Emily at your house earlier."
"But I didn't want to give it to him."
"This is the last thing you left in this world."
He gave a bitter laugh."He even suspected you and I had a child."
"How I wish that were true. If only I'd have met you sooner and took care of your health."
"Then you'd...still be alive,wouldn't you,Sarah?"
Tears streamed down his face.
My tears fell down too,I shook my head my head, insisting it wasn't so.
There are no"ifs"or"should've knowns"in this world.
Fifteen years with Daniel, five married—every time it was I who couldn't let go,couldn't sever the bond,it was all my doing.
And now,I was dead.
"You should move on.If there's a next life,I hope I’m the person by your side school to marriage, not Daniel."
I reached to wipe his tears.
Dr.Mason locked eyes with me,reaching for my hand.
He missed however, his hand went through mine.
Shocked,I waved my hand before him.
He lowered his head, then looked up,gaze through me again.
I floated, testing several times, but the result was always the same.
