As a soul,from the moment I was dead,I stayed by Dr.Mason's side.
I had nowhere else to go.
Alive,I was alone;dead,I was still alone.
The day before their wedding,Emily called.
I stared at the ringing phone.Though not in my contact list,I knew the number by heart.
In our five-year marriage,Emily had called me countless times,sending photos of her with Daniel and screenshots of the bank transfers between Daniel and her.
I floated beside Dr.Mason.
"She just wants to gloat."
"A bitch like her wishing me well—what's her game?"
I shifted my position and crossed my legs.
"Why keep my phone active after handling my body?"
Dr.Mason studied the caller ID,answering after a moment.
He said nothing.
Emily's smug voice came through,"Sarah,tomorrow Daniel and I will have our ceremony.You should come."
"You said not to contact you,but a wedding's big news.It'd be rude not to tell you."
Dr.Mason hung up,his face dark.
I'd never seen him so grim.I floated over,trying to pagt his head.
I sat back on the sofa,missing his lingering,full-of-love gaze as I turned around.
On their wedding day,Daniel called.
"Sarah,I'm getting married today.We're truly done."
"That day at your house,I saw a man with your key."
"Sarah,the child was his,wasn't it?"
"No wonder you wouldn't forgive me,no matter how I begged,promised to make things right,to cut Emily off."
"You already had someone else,didn't you?"
Hearing what he said, I trembled with rage.
What a vile man,he was the one who cheated yet he accused others.
Getting married and still gloating to me.
Dr.Mason gripped the phone and said through gritted teeth,"What did you say?"
Daniel panicked,"Why you?Where's Sarah?"
Dr.Mason continued,"You dare mention her?Why can't it be me?"
"Sarah's dead."
"You want her?No chance, whether in this life or the next."
"Because if there's a next life,I'll find her first."
Daniel's voice trembled,incredulous,"What?Sarah's dead?How?"
"How could she die?Tell me!"
"Who are you?Where are you?You think I'll believe you just because you have her phone?"
"I'll call the police."
Dr.Mason sneered,"If calling the police could bring Sarah back,do it now."
"City General,Oncology,Elliot Mason.I'll wait."
"If you don't come today,you'll never hear a word about Sarah from me."
I floated over,pouting,"Why tell him,Elliot?He’s just."
"My death's none of his business.Crocodile tears."
"When I was alive,he wished I would die to make room for Emily."
"Now I'm dead,and he's pretending to care."
