Chapter 3

Just half a year ago, I was still Sterling Grant's caged canary kept in Bright Garden.
Being the despised daughter of the Lawrence family's secondary wife versus being Sterling's hidden canary.
The biggest difference was that Sterling would never let me want for money.
But in the end, I still chose to return to the Lawrence family.
That night, I skillfully sat on his lap wearing a nightgown.
His movements were rough on the living room sofa.
Afterwards, I suddenly asked him a question.
"If someday I were to get married, you would give me some money, right?"
He whispered in my ear.
"Need money?"
Although I hesitated, I still obediently nodded to him.
The next day he transferred one million to my card.
Before leaving, I sent him one last message.
"Thank you for the million. I'm going back to get married to someone I love. I've spent quite a bit of your money these past two years, but I've given something in return. I'm sure you won't miss this amount. If we meet again, let's respect each other!"
After a long while, I finally received a reply to this message.
"Fine. Once you leave, never appear in front of me again."
With that, all means of contact between us were severed.
During these six months, Miles Lawrence had been slowly introducing me to their high society circles so that the Porter Family wouldn't look down on my background.
This was the second time I had seen Sterling Grant since moving out of Bright Garden.
The first time was on Frost Lawrence's phone—they had a photo together, both looking radiant, which Frost had set as her screensaver.
[Could I not attend?]
I tried to negotiate with him.
After I sent the message, he picked up the red wine beside him and drank it in one gulp, then heavily slammed his phone onto the table. The loud bang made everyone's nerves tense up.
I hurriedly typed a few more words secretly.
[Do I have to peel the shrimp? If you want me to eat it, and you agree, I'll come.]
Soon the whole plate of shrimp I had peeled was pushed in front of me.
"Eat them all, don't leave a single one."
I obediently started eating.
"I knew this wasn't over. How could Uncle Grant let someone he dislikes off so easily?"
"Just wait, there's definitely something more exciting coming."
Indeed, it was quite exciting. I ate shrimp until I threw up, and on the way to the hospital, he had them change direction midway and sent me to Bright Garden instead.
