But he never lasted long at any of them.
Ryan always believed he could make a comeback, become a big boss earning millions again.
But he'd never find someone like me—someone who supported him wholeheartedly.
So, he took his frustrations out at work—talking back, insulting colleagues during meetings.
Soon, he was fired from one company after another.
When Chloe saw Ryan was broke, her mental state oddly improved. She quickly ran off with a wealthy, overweight man.
I thought I'd never hear about them again.
Until six months later, when my friend suddenly called.
“Big news! Something wild happened!”
“What?”
I didn't need names—I knew exactly who she meant.
My friend clicked her tongue,
“Ryan got fired again last month. Last night, out of nowhere, he went to see Chloe.”
“Turns out Chloe's not doing well either. This new guy might be rich, but he abuses her—she's covered in bruises.”
“No one knows why, but maybe because this guy is even worse than Ryan, Chloe actually fell for Ryan's charm and forgave him! And the craziest part—they hooked up right then and there at her place.”
“Guess what happened next?”
I was stunned, “What?”
My friend raised her voice,
“The overweight guy came home unexpectedly and caught them together. In a rage, he beat them both.”
“The guy is strong—used to domestic violence. When he's mad, he doesn't hold back. Ryan tried to fight back, but the guy grabbed a chair and smashed it over him—shattered both his legs.”
“Chloe got it worse. The guy was ruthless. He took scissors and mutilated her face—she's disfigured for life.”
I sighed after hearing the story.
Just as I hung up, my new boyfriend walked out of the kitchen.
He handed me a cup of warm bubble tea,
“I just made it. Low-fat, low-sugar, with the thick taro paste you love. Try it.”
I took a sip, and my eyes lit up.
“It's delicious.”
Sweet.
I thought—those bitter days were finally behind me.
From now on, life would be like this bubble tea—always sweet.
