He peered inside and said, "Mrs. Radford, I'm Amelia's classmate. I heard she is flying off to Prestonia soon, and I wanted to say a few words to her."
Mom was fine with that and called me out.
There were only two of us at the stairwell. I spoke first. "What do you want to say? Make it quick."
Maverick frowned slightly, studying my face. His stare made me uncomfortable. I turned around and opened the door to head inside. "If you're not going to say anything, I'm leaving…"
He hurriedly reached out and stopped me. "Amelia, are you still angry with me?"
I looked at him, puzzled.
He gave a knowing, almost smug smile. "I get it. Being dumped must have been humiliating for you. Honestly, anyone would have chosen Ginger. She's beautiful, gentle, and always listens to me. I'm crazy about her."
I couldn't help but burst out laughing. "Maverick, did you come here all the way to tell me how much you love Ginger?"
Seeing that I was completely unfazed, he grew slightly flustered. "Stop pretending, Amelia. I know you haven't gotten over me. You couldn't stop looking at me at the graduation party.
"If you still like me, you can just say so. We can stay friends. Don't worry. Ginger is very understanding. She isn't the jealous type."
I stared at him, so self-assured it was almost impressive, and found myself at a loss for words.
That party had hundreds of people. Everyone was looking at him.
I didn't bother arguing and said flatly, "You've got it wrong. I never wanted to be friends with you. Is there anything else you wanted to say?"
When he realized I wasn't angry, a flash of defeat crossed his face. "Amelia, don't think getting into Bloomdale University makes you better than anyone else.
"Degrees aren't that important anymore, especially not something obscure like computer science. Ginger's parents are businesspeople. I can learn a lot from them.
"We'll go to a local college, then take over her family’s business and become our own bosses. I'll definitely end up doing better than you…"
I listened patiently as he unloaded a bunch of self-satisfying remarks. Eventually, he ran out of words to say and looked at me expectantly.
My face remained expressionless. All I did was nod lightly. "I see. Then, I wish you all the success."
With that, I closed the door, leaving him standing outside.
