After this matter was over,I thought they should be afraid to cause trouble again.
I planned to transfer ten thousand dollars to them after a few days and didn't want to have any more dealings with them.
Unexpectedly,just a couple of days after things settled down,my grandmother caused trouble at my mother's shop again.
This time,she came alone.She went to my mother's shop and smashed plates and bowls.Neighbors within a mile of the street came to watch the commotion.
After the last incident,I was more cautious and left my phone number with the neighbors of the shop.
I knew that my mother didn't want me to worry and didn't want to delay my work.I was afraid that she wouldn't tell me if something happened to her.
Then,on my way to the airport today,I received a call from a neighbor.
I immediately changed my plane ticket and asked the driver to turn around.
When I arrived at the small street,before I even entered the shop,I saw a crowd gathered around it,three circles inside and three circles outside.
A group of people were standing there,eating melon seeds and whispering:
"Lily's mother-in-law is something else.She does this once a year without fail."
"Hey,that's right.Lily is such a nice person.Why did she have to lose her husband and have such a terrible mother-in-law?"
"Alas,she has a hard life."
With each word I heard,my heart sank a little further.It turned out that for all these years,I hadn't even fulfilled my duty as a daughter.
My mother had been bullied by these evil people for so long,and I hadn't noticed it at all.I only found out from others.
Besides feeling sad,I was so angry that my blood rushed to my head.I rushed into the crowd:
"Mary,have some decency!"
The commotion immediately stopped,but only for a second.
"Is this Lily's daughter?"
"Yes.She's pretty,isn't she?She graduated from a university in New York.She's the first one from our place to go to a top 985 university!"
"What's the use of reading so much?I've seen plenty of those college students who forget their roots once they climb up the social ladder."
My grandmother has sharp ears.When she heard this,she became very excited:
"Everyone,come and take a look at my good granddaughter.Our family spent a lot of money and effort to send her to a good university.But this little bitch turned out to be an ungrateful wretch!When her uncle,her father's brother,is in trouble,she not only refuses to help but also beats me with a stick when I went to beg her yesterday!Look,I still have the wounds on me!"
As she spoke,she leaned her neck forward for the neighbors to see.
It was really ridiculous.I didn't hit her face with the stick at all yesterday.At most,I whipped her thighs a few times.The marks probably went away long ago.
She was still trying to deceive people with her hyperthyroidism.
The shop was in a complete mess.Ceramic shards,soup,and food were all over the place,which she had caused.
My mother was wearing an apron,her hair was in a mess,and she was so angry that her face was red.Her fingers were trembling as she pointed at my grandmother:
"Annie was raised by me alone.I didn't spend a single penny of yours on her tuition fees from childhood to adulthood!I earned that money by working three jobs from dawn to dusk.If I hadn't been so tough back then,she would have been sold off to get married by you,you old hag!"
When my grandmother heard this,she glared at my mother,stuck out her neck,put her hands on her hips,and said aggressively:
"Cut the crap.Either give me the money or get out of this shop!"
As she spoke,she spat on the ground.
I stood in front of my mother,grabbed my mother's wrist with one hand,signaling her not to be afraid.
I took the shop key from the wall with the other hand and threw it at my grandmother.
I faced my grandmother,with a cold face,raised my eyebrows,and my eyes were full of disdain and provocation:
"Take the key.And don't think about that 300,000 dollars anymore.I won't give you a single penny.You will regret what you did today.I will cancel all your funds,as well as your five social insurances and one housing fund!"
As soon as I said this,she immediately became anxious and shouted at the top of her voice with her hoarse voice:
"Why?That insurance is mine.Why do you have the right to cancel it?!I haven't even calculated the medical expenses for the beating you gave me!You little slut,I'll slap you to death!"
After saying that,she raised her hand to hit me in the face.
I grabbed her wrist and looked at her with a mocking and pitying smile:
"It's because I've been paying all the insurance premiums for you all these years.Even your life is up to me.What right do you have to shout at me here?"
"Oh,right.I'll also cancel all the insurances of your son.Let's see who will bury you when you're sick or dead!I advise you not to cause trouble for me and my mother anymore.Otherwise,I'll make sure your son doesn't even die with dignity!"
After saying that,I took my mother's hand and walked towards the door.My grandmother tried to rush over again,but she was stopped by several neighbors:
"Hey,hey.I think Lily didn't do anything wrong.You old woman,don't be ungrateful."
"Bah!You have no right to stop me!She's my daughter-in-law,and she should spend money on me.You're just like Lily!A bunch of rats and bugs in the gutter.Let me go!"
After saying that,she opened her mouth as if to bite someone,but was stopped by the patrol police called by the neighbors.
I didn't care anymore.I took my mother's hand and went home.
