When Iris saw me catch up,she covered her mouth in surprise.
I forced a smile."Yeah, with all these layers of clothes,it's not easy to recognize me."
Finn was an explorer who was passionate about testing his limits and exploring the unknown.Whenever he received a new show invitation, whether it was crossing a swamp full of crocodiles or traversing a frigid sea,he would agree without hesitation and often be away from home for half a year.
I took care of all the household chores,as well as our parents and children. After finishing my work late at night,I was often so worried about his safety that I couldn’t sleep.Over time, wrinkles appeared around my eyes, and my skin was no longer as tight and smooth as it used to be.
In contrast,Iris, who had returned from studying abroad, was young, beautiful, and vigorous.
I felt a deep sense of sadness.Maybe I really was just like the logistics woman of Finn's team.
"Finn, let's go faster.Charlie is getting farther ahead!"Iris said, eagerly linking her arm with Finn's.
The two of them strode forward.Looking at their intimate backs,my chest felt stuffy, and my breathing became rapid.
I wasn't sure if it was a heart attack or just heartbreak,so I slowed down and forced myself to take deep breaths.
Just then, the golden retriever, which had been running ahead, suddenly stopped and started panting heavily.
As its gasps grew heavier,Iris bagan to panic. She hugged the dog tightly and tears began streaming down her face."Charlie! What's wrong with you?Don't scare me like that!"
Finn rushed over.A hint of pity flashed in his eyes, but more of it was concern for Iris."Don't panic.I'll carry it down the mountain.Eva,you stay here.I'll be back as soon as possible."
As he spoke,he bent down, gesturing for Iris to put Charlie on his back.
Iris looked up at him with tears still in her eyes and on her cheeks."Finn darling, thank you."
Finn carried Charlie and was about to leave.
My hands trembling,I grabbed Finn's sleeve.Struggling to catch my breath,I pleaded with a sob,"Finn, don't go!I need you.Don't leave me here alone!"
Finn frowned and didn't even look at me."Eva,be reasonable, will you?Charlie is in a very dangerous situation right now,and I have to send it down the mountain first! As for you,it's just a matter of waiting for a while. There’s no need to make a fuss over it and act scared!"
"But I also..."
Before I could finish,Finn interrupted me rudely. He impatiently shook off my hand and said firmly,"That's enough!Stop making a scene!I'll be back soon.Just take care of yourself!"
With that,he turned and left without looking back, carrying Charlie and accompanied by Iris.
I wanted to chase after them, but my legs were like lead, and I couldn't move no matter how hard I tried.
I could only watch helplessly as their figures disappeared into the vast snowy mountain.
My chest hurt more and more, and it became harder to breathe.I told myself to hold on a little longer, that Finn would surely come back to save me.
But I was wrong.
I waited and waited, until it got dark, until the snowfall grew heavier, until my body started to go stiff, but he still didn't return.
I was desperate.I knew he wasn't coming back.
He had left me alone on this icy mountain,to fend for myself and face death.
I died, on the day I had been looking forward to the most-our wedding anniversary.
