We reached the hospital as George regained consciousness, asking for me and Ethan.
I knew he worried about us.I clasped his hand tightly.“George, don’t worry.Ethan’s coming.Stay awake. We’re going to hike the Rockies next month, remember?Don’t give up!”
George smiled, but a faint sadness lingered,as if he wanted to say something but stopped, glancing at me.

Fortunately, the driver's blood was a perfect match.
Just then,Ethan and Sophie showed up at the nurse’s station, holding their dog, asking about something.
Emily rusjed over,crying,“Ethan,you’re finally here!”
Before he could speak,Sophie tugged him away.“Ethan, they say there’s no vet here.Let’s go to the next hospital. That crazy woman made Buddy sick!”
Her glare could’ve skinned me alive.
Emily’s eyes dimmed. She slapped Ethan.“You’re here for the dog,not Dad?Have you no sense of decency? He was asking for you,and you’re fooling around with this woman? You're both despicable!”

Ethan shook Sophie off, guilt in his eyes.“I didn’t know Dad was hurt.Claire was telling the truth.Quick, take me to donate blood…”
Sophie clung to him, sobbing,“Ethan, don’t risk your life!I heard transfusions can makeyou week—cause fevers, infections. Some people even get HIV from dodgy hospitals. What would Buddy and I do if something happened to you?”
My fists clenched, nails digging into my palms, pain fueling my rage.
I slapped Sophie hard.She stumbled,then collapsed dramatically,clutching her face,wailing,“Ethan,she hit me!I can’t live like this…”

Without thinking,Ethan punched my chest.Blood filled my mouth,but I couldn’t hold it back,spitting red.
My vision flickered.I grabbed a chair to stay upright.
Chaos erupted behind me.Emily screamed,“Dad!”
I tried to look, but my eyelids felt as heavy as lead, refusing to open.
