"Where do you expect me to go if you tell me to leave?I have no home..."
Jack sneered."What does your homelessness have to do with me?Go wherever you want.Vanish from my sight."
"Besides, since you killed my mother, how can you still have the audacity to stay here?Aren't you afraid that she'll come for you in the middle of the night?"
Lily's face turned red and then pale, but she still refused to leave.
"No,I'm not leaving. Now that you and Grace have fallen out,I want to stay with you."
Jack lost his patience and said in disgust,"If you don't leave,I'll call the police."
Lily's face paled and flushed in quick succession."Jack! We dated for four years.I love you so much. How can you treat me like this!"
Jack ignored her.
I watched the scene with a sardonic amusement. When I heard these words,I couldn't help but snort disdainfully.
Lily gritted her teeth, gave me a resentful look, and then slowly walked out the door.
The door closed behind her.
Realizing that I was still in the living room,Jack hastily wiped his face, knelt down in front of me,and hugged my legs."Grace,I was wrong.I really know I was wrong."
"Please forgive me,okay?Don't divorce me..."
"I've always loved you. These days,my time with Lily was just me finally understanding and letting go,trying to say goodbye to the past."
"But now I regret it..."
"You can understand that,right,Grace?"
He looked at me with red-rimmed eyes.
If it were the old me,seeing him like this would have melted my heart.
But now,I just pulled his hands away and said coldly,
"Jack,a person's love can be utterly consumed. Why do you think that after all that has happened,I would still love and like you?"
I had made myself so clear, and I couldn't figure out which word had given him hope.
I saw him snatch up his phone and block all of Lily's contact information right in front of me.
After blocking her,he said cautiously,"Grace,I won't have any more contact with Lily from now on."
"I know you hate me.It's okay. You can do whatever you want to me as long as we don't get divorced."
I lifted my eyelids and looked at him."You don't want a divorce?"
He nodded.
I smiled and said,"Fine. Then go and ask my mother what she thinks."
Jack's back instantly hunched over.He tightly covered his mouth, but the sobs still escaped. His tears plummeted onto the floor.
I didn't look at him.I went back to my room, made a call to the real-estate agent, and then sat on the bed.
Looking at the urn on the table,my eyes stung again.
I said softly,"Mom,we both misjudged him."
"If we had never met Jack and never brought him home, would you not have been so miserable and would you still be alive?"
There was no answer.
The tears I had been holding back finally spilled over.
Jack always said that my mother was overly shrewd, even haggling over the price of vegetables. He despised her for that.
But if my mother were really so miserly, she wouldn't have taken Jack into our home and nurtured him after his parents died.
For more than ten years,my mother had supported the family with her slender shoulders.
Even though our financial situation was just average, she had never pinched pennies on his food, clothing,or daily expenses.
Moreover, when he was short of exactly ten points from the score required by the university he wanted to attend in the college entrance examination,my mother pleaded with everyone she knew and used the money for his medicine. She managed to scrape together a full 100,000 yuan to send him to that school.
After she learned that we were getting married, she depleted all her savings to buy this house in this expensive area.Afraid that he would be unhappy, she even put his name on the property deed.
