"Tell her I'm in a meeting." Michael didn't even look up as he continued signing documents.
"That's the third 'meeting' today." I heard Mia saunter over, and through the crack in the door, I saw her kneading his shoulders. "God, doesn't she get the hint?"
Michael put down his pen and caught Mia's hand. "She's just a means to an end. I've already secured most of the Williams family's assets. Just need to play the game a little longer."
"Patience?" Mia sneered. "That's not what you said last night." She leaned down and whispered in his ear, "I'm sick of being your dirty little secret."
Michael swiveled his chair toward her. "You know the Williams family's position in the business world. I need her father's support to cement my control of the Davis Group."
"What about me?" Mia's eyes flashed dangerously. "After everything I've done for you? The dirt on your competitors, the recordings from board meetings..."
"Relax," Michael pulled her onto his lap. "Once I secure my position as the undisputed head of Davis Group, Rachel Williams becomes expendable."
"You swear?"
"I swear." Michael kissed her lips. "When that time comes, you'll be the only Mrs. Davis that matters."
The surprise birthday gift slipped from my fingers and crashed to the floor with a dull thud.
