Chapter 13: Family History

William's study was bathed in soft light, the old photographs on the walls appearing particularly mysterious in the shadows. I sat in an armchair, holding Noah's specially brewed herbal tea. That strange restlessness had diminished, but curiosity grew stronger.

William stood by his desk, his fingers lightly caressing an ancient wooden box—the one I had seen that night at the Moonlight Camping.

"Before I tell you the truth," William began, his voice deep and solemn, "I'd like you to help me organize some old photographs."

I looked at him in confusion but nodded in agreement. William took a heavy album from the bookshelf and placed it before me.

"These are memories from my youth," he explained. "Friends and experiences from college days."

I opened the album, seeing young William photographed with various people. The photos were yellowed, but the smiles remained vivid. I reached the middle and suddenly stopped—one photo captured my full attention.

In the photo, young William stood between two people: a handsome blond man and a beautiful silver-haired woman. The woman's eyes made me catch my breath—one gold, one blue, identical to my own heterochromatic eyes.

"This is..." my voice trembled.

William nodded gently. "Elizabeth and James Grey. Your parents."

I felt the world spinning. I gripped the album tightly, my knuckles turning white. "You knew my parents?"

"Not just knew them," William sat across from me. "Elizabeth was my best friend, and also our family's closest ally."

I looked up, my eyes full of questions. "Ally? What does that mean?"

William took a deep breath. "Ella, have you heard of the Moonshadow Wolf Clan?"

I shook my head.

"The Moonshadow Clan is an ancient werewolf bloodline, almost extinct. They have been allied with our Moon family—another werewolf lineage—for generations."

I felt dizzy. "Werewolves? You mean... like in legends?"

"You're not human, Ella."

Jay Moon's words pierced through my reality like a sharp blade.

I wanted to laugh, to tell him this joke wasn't funny at all. But when I saw his deep eyes gleaming in the moonlight, when I felt my body being irresistibly drawn to the full moon outside the window, I knew he was telling the truth.

A few months ago, I was just a girl with no parents and no one to rely on. Now, I stood in the living room of a werewolf family, with secrets more ancient than theirs flowing through my blood.

William nodded. "Not exactly like in legends, but essentially the same. We can transform during full moons, possess enhanced senses and strength. The Moon family is known for strength and endurance, while the Moonshadow clan..." he looked at my eyes, "the Moonshadow clan is known for the ability to control moonlight."

I recalled my strange connection to moonlight, the recurring moon imagery in my artwork, my unusual sensations during full moons.

"You're saying... I..."

"You are the last pure-blooded descendant of the Moonshadow clan, Ella," William said softly. "Elizabeth was the princess of the Moonshadow clan. She fell in love with a human, James Grey. This relationship was not approved in werewolf society, so they chose to flee and live in seclusion in the human world."

My fingers gently touched the face of my mother in the photo, looking for my own reflection. "What... happened to them?"

"A car accident," William's voice was filled with sadness. "But it wasn't an accident. Some werewolf extremists couldn't accept the mixed marriage, they... took action."

I felt a mixture of anger and sadness. "So my parents were murdered?"

William nodded. "In her final moments, Elizabeth contacted me, asking me to take care of you. But by the time I arrived, you had already been placed in the foster system. I spent eighteen years searching for you, Ella. Until that stormy night... I'm sorry..."

"You found me in the forest," I said softly, recalling our first meeting. "It wasn't coincidence, was it?"

"I sensed your presence," William admitted. "The Moonshadow bloodline is particularly active before and during full moons. That night in the storm, I felt a familiar energy—Elizabeth's energy, flowing within you."

I stood up, walking to the window, gazing at the moonlight outside. I extended my hand, letting moonlight pour over my palm, feeling that wonderful connection.

"So that's why I've always had a special connection to moonlight? Why I feel unusual during full moons? Why my artwork always includes the moon?"

William came to my side. "Yes. Your bloodline is awakening, Ella. Especially after finding emotional belonging, the power begins to manifest."

I turned to William. "Jay and the others... they're also..."

"Yes, they all inherited the Moon family's werewolf bloodline," William nodded. "That's why Luke insisted on waiting until after the full moon to tell you the truth. He was worried you would be afraid, would leave."

I recalled Jay's kiss in the forest, the worry and love in his eyes. I suddenly understood his fear—afraid that I would reject him after learning the truth.

"I won't leave," I said firmly. "This is my home, you are my family."

Tears of relief glistened in William's eyes. "You're as brave as your mother, Ella."

He took out a silver pendant from the wooden box—moon-shaped, with a blue gemstone embedded in the center.

"This is the Moonshadow clan's heirloom, which should have been given to you by your mother when you came of age," William placed the pendant in my hand. "It can help you control your power, especially during full moons."

I accepted the pendant, feeling a wonderful resonance. When I put it on, a calm power flowed throughout my body. The moonlight seemed to grow brighter, yet no longer caused me discomfort.

"There's one more thing you should know," William said, his expression becoming serious. "Victor Stone is not an ordinary person. He comes from the family of that extremist werewolf organization, the very ones who murdered your parents. I suspect he has discovered your identity, which is why he's so obsessed with getting you back."

I felt a chill. "He knows who I am?"

"He may have suspicions, but isn't certain," William explained. "Your heterochromatic eyes are a mark of the Moonshadow clan, but your power hasn't fully awakened, so he can't confirm."

I gripped the pendant. "So, what should I do?"

William's expression became determined. "First, you need to learn to control your abilities. Second, we need to protect you until you're strong enough. Finally..." he paused, "you need to decide whether to accept your bloodline, to become the true heir of the Moonshadow clan."

I looked at the full moon outside the window, feeling the power flowing within me. For eighteen years, I had been searching for belonging, for identity. Now, the answer was before me, both frightening and exciting.
