Chapter 12: Moonlight Storm

798words
The full moon hung high, silver light pouring down like water. I felt something churning inside me, an indescribable restlessness. Since meeting Jay in the hallway, we had been avoiding each other, that necessary conversation postponed.

Tonight, I could no longer bear this suppression. My head throbbed, my senses abnormally acute—I could hear distant winds, smell the forest, feel moonlight on my skin.

I quietly left the house, walking towards the forest. In the moonlight, everything appeared so clear, as if my vision had suddenly enhanced. Trees, rocks, paths, all presented a strange beauty in the moonlight.

I reached a small clearing, looking up at the full moon, letting my emotions pour out.

"Why?" I whispered to the moon. "Why now? Why him?"

I recalled Jay's smile, his focused expression while creating, his determination when protecting me. These memories made my heart ache, yet brought warmth.

"Ella?"

I turned to see Jay standing in the tree shadows, moonlight outlining his silhouette. His silver hair gleamed in the moonlight, his blue eyes deep as the sea.

"What are you doing here?" I asked, my voice trembling with emotion.

"I could ask you the same," Jay approached. "It's dangerous to be alone in the forest on a full moon night."

I smiled bitterly. "For me, the most dangerous thing right now isn't the forest."

Jay stopped before me, only an arm's length between us. "Then what is it?"

"My feelings," I looked directly into his eyes, deciding to no longer evade. "My feelings for you, Jay."

In the moonlight, Jay's expression softened. "Ella..."

"I know it's complicated," I continued, my voice growing firmer. "You're from the Moon family, I'm an orphan girl you took in. But I can't control my heart. Every time I see you, every time I hear your voice, I feel..."

Jay stepped forward, shortening the distance between us. "Do you think I don't feel the same? Since you came to our home, my world has changed. Your courage, your talent, your soul... they attract me, like the moon attracts the tides."

I felt my heart race. "But won't this ruin everything? Your family..."

"Luke has already spoken with me," Jay said softly. "He... supports us."

I widened my eyes in surprise. "Really?"

Jay nodded. "But he also said there are things you need to know first. About our family."

"After the full moon," I said, remembering Luke's words.

"Yes," Jay's expression became serious. "Ella, our family has... secrets. Once you know, you might change your view of us. Of me."

I shook my head, reaching out to touch his cheek. "Nothing could change my feelings, Jay. Whatever the secret is, it won't change how good you've been to me, won't change who you are."

Jay held my hand, his eyes flashing with complex emotions. "How can you be so certain?"

"Because I know your heart," I answered softly. "Through your art, your actions, your eyes. Whatever the appearance, the real you won't change."

In the moonlight, we drew closer. I could feel Jay's breath, smell the scent of pine and paint on him.

"Ella," Jay whispered. "You're the most beautiful accident in my life."

He leaned forward, his lips gently touching mine. The kiss was gentle yet firm, like a promise, yet also a question. I closed my eyes, responding to the kiss, the confusion in my heart finally settling.

Just at that moment, a strange feeling swept over me. The moonlight seemed to grow brighter, shining directly on us. I felt an unprecedented power surging within me, as if the moon itself was calling to me.

I abruptly pulled back, gasping.

"Ella?" Jay looked at me with concern. "Are you okay?"

I shook my head, feeling dizzy. "I don't know... it feels strange. Like... like something awakening inside me."

Jay's expression became alert. "We need to go home. Now."

"Why? What's happening?" I asked in confusion.

Jay looked at the full moon. "Trust me, Ella."

We hurriedly returned to the Moon house. Along the way, I felt that strange sensation growing stronger. The moonlight seemed to follow me, tree shadows became unusually clear in my eyes, forest sounds amplified in my ears.

Back home, Jay immediately went to find Luke and William. I was arranged to wait in the living room, with Noah bringing me a special herbal tea.

"Drink this. You'll feel better," he said gently, but his eyes held undisguisable worry.

Aiden sat beside me, unusually quiet. "How do you feel?"

"Like... something's changing inside," I answered softly. "Like the moon is calling me."

"That's because it is," William's voice came from the doorway. He entered the living room, his expression serious and complex. "Ella, I think it's time to tell you the truth. About our family, and also about... your own truth."
