Chapter 2

Sophia Bailey finally left as dawn approached, scurrying away with her hat pulled low.

That guilty look—identical to when she stole my necklace as a child.

I watched her vanish at the complex entrance.

The living room light flickered on, right on schedule.

Gregory had promised to leave a light on for me every night.

I pushed open the door and was hit by a wave of sickly-sweet perfume.

Gregory rushed to greet me, his arm snaking around my waist, his clammy palm sliding up and down my back. His lips pressed against my forehead, then moved to my ear. "Baby, you're finally home... God, I've missed you..."

Missed me? The stench of perfume still clung to his pajamas—his "longing" couldn't be more fake.

Nausea welled up inside me. I shoved him away.

"Hold on," I stepped back, plastering on a perfect smile. "I have something for you."
