She needed a scapegoat.
If the police got involved, Mike would come after her.
She was terrified.
Susan believed her and raged.
"She kidnapped you once—she'll do it again! She needs jail time!"
She tried to pull Emily inside, but Emily stood firm.
Seeing me, Emily avoided eye contact.
My parents heard her and thought she was being kind.
They said to Susan, "Since she's safe, let's forget it?"
Susan snapped, "No way! You're dreaming! If it were your daughter, you wouldn't say that!"
"Your Lily's evil—you think it's okay? I'll make sure she pays!"
I clenched my fists.
I said coldly, "Fine! I never said not to call the police—do it!"
"Let them investigate how I hired someone, how I kidnapped a grown woman, where I got the car, how I stole her ID, who she married!"
"See if any courthouse allows proxy marriages! Check the footage—see if she was forced!"
Emily paled, shocked by my defiance.
She tugged Susan's sleeve, trying to stop her.
But Susan was too angry.
She smirked. "Good! Let's ask the police!"
She went into the office.
Emily trembled, avoiding my gaze.
She looked like a victim.
Susan thought she was scared, comforting her.
But Emily was panicking about the police.
Officers went to gather evidence.
We waited.
Emily kept trying to cancel the report.
