Chapter 5

I stared at that flawless face for a long moment.
I understood what Jenna meant. She was certain she'd get the position and wanted to push me out now. Otherwise, when she got promoted with the chairwoman's son as her boyfriend, she'd become office gossip.
So, she was "advising" me to find a backup plan, to leave the company. Essentially, it was all for herself to avoid the whispers and rumors.
How perfectly convenient. I could have accepted her change of heart. Most relationships didn't last anyway.
I just never expected her to be this selfishly inhuman.
I looked at her and said flatly, "Knowing you has been the worst mistake of my life."
She fell silent, unable to argue back.
After breaking up with me, Jenna went public with her "office romance" with Felix.
When she was with me, she always hesitated and said going public wasn't a good idea. Now, not only had she made it official, but she posted about their relationship on social media constantly. She was loud about it.
Apparently, it was only a bad idea because I wasn't Felix. I didn't have his advantages, his status, or his wealth.
My first real encounter with Felix came one afternoon after they made their relationship official. That afternoon, people were either out getting lunch, scrolling through their phones at their desks, or napping with their heads down.
I was heading to wash my lunch container when I ran into him.
I moved to leave through another door without hesitation, but he quickly blocked my path. Out of nowhere, he said, "I know you're Jenna's ex-boyfriend."
His eyes studied me carefully. He was tall, but not as tall as me.
I glanced down at him with mild curiosity. Disappointment flickered across his face. It was probably because he didn't see the reaction he'd hoped for.
He paused briefly before continuing, "I saw her computer wallpaper was you. Anyone paying attention could figure out you two had a relationship."
So? I raised an eyebrow slightly and waited for him to go on.
"My mom actually admires Jenna a lot. She says Jenna reminds her of herself when she was young. That same tenacity and that refusal to give up.
"I'll be honest with you. My mom wants to mentor Jenna properly. And it just so happens we like each other, so naturally we got together."
How naturally convenient.
"Hunter, I'm telling you this so you understand. Don't embarrass yourself. Be smart and resign."
After all that, getting me to quit was clearly his goal. But he was too naive. So naive it was almost funny.
My expression relaxed slightly as I looked at him. "You think a few words from you will make me quit? Or are you saying you want to fire me?
"The first won't happen. As for the second, you can check with HR. The company has procedures for termination, and HR would need to notify me of the reason.
"Also, you're just an intern, Mr. Foster. You don't have the authority to fire a director yet.
"Instead of wasting time here, why don't you actually do your job? Work hard enough, and maybe you'll catch up to me someday."
His expression darkened. I ignored him and went to wash my lunch container.
