Chapter 7

Silvio had hired the top medical team to look after her. Their mission was to ensure that they could prolong her pain regardless of the price.
An abandoned warehouse in the suburbs of Micosa had been modified into a dark, simple hospital room. Anna was covered in tubes while lying in her bed. She had to bear the internal pain of two different blood types and DNA massacring each other in her body, as she had no anaesthesia or anti-rejection drugs to help her through this. She could feel her organs being torn alive right inside her.
I pushed open the doors of the warehouse. The light shone on Anna's contorted face as she looked at me while trying to say something. She was croaking at me, and she sounded like an old, dehydrated bellow.
"M-Mia… Just… kill me…"
She struggled to reach out to me with her thin, frail hand, but her struggle only caused her nails to fall off.
I sat on a chair next to her bed while Silvio carefully poured me a cup of hot tea.
"Why are you talking about death, Anna? Your beloved Ernest gave you that kidney. Isn't that called love?"
I placed a mirror in front of her. When Anna saw herself in the mirror, she screamed in desperation. Her skin had started to rot and turn black from the serious side effects of her body rejecting an organ that did not belong inside her.
"Isn't this what you've always dreamed of? To be connected to him by blood." My tone was calm as I put the mirror down.
"Ernest is right next door to you." I pointed at the thin wall. "He can hear you wailing every day, but he can't even move a finger to help you."
On the other side of the warehouse, Ernest was locked up in a metal cage and cowering in a corner like a dog. His once gentlemanly features were now covered with dirt and wounds. When he first heard Anna's screams, he was filled with guilt and fear, but they were now replaced by numbness and a tinge of annoyance.
Just look. That was Ernest's so-called forever love. When love had turned into heavy chains that tortured him, he wished more than anyone of us for Anna to die as quickly as possible.
Silvio sneered as he kicked the metal cage. "Listen, the woman is calling out for you, Don Marino."
Ernest covered his ears while throwing himself crazily against the metal bars. "Let her die! I'm begging you to let her die! I can't listen to her any longer. Those screams are driving me crazy!"
Anna was stunned when she heard his screaming. Her pleading eyes instantly transformed to a look of wild hatred. "Ernest Marino, you're despicable…"
She tried everything she could to knock down the IV stand next to her. "You lied to me… You told me that Mia was just a medical remedy… You said that we can finally be together legitimately once she's dead…"
What a wonderful show of lovers hating each other in the end. I could never tire of this drama.
Silvio lit up a cigar, looking impatient. "Are you done having fun, Mia? The old man is pushing for you to return to Severia."
I stood up. I had been living life as a 'normal' person for the past six months in Micosa with as much humility as possible, but I had been stepped all over by others because of that. Yet, all I got in return was being plotted against by two lousy people.
"Let's go." I walked away without looking back. "Get the doctor to continue keeping Anna alive with injections. I want her to live another six months, not a day more or less. It would be the same period of time when I was Donna."
The desperate wailing from Anna and a despairing howl from Ernest could be heard coming from the warehouse behind me.
It was starting to snow even more heavily in Micosa. The white snow was finally covering up every dirty stain there was in the city.
