As expected, his face instantly fell. The previous displays of tenderness and love were nothing but illusions.
I rushed out of my room and closed the door loudly with a slam.
When I tried to heave a sigh of relief, I saw Lana, who was kneeling at the door while looking teary.
Since it was autumn, the nights were especially chilly. I would tremble if I did not put on a jacket. But Lana was still wearing that engagement gown.
I had no idea how long she had been kneeling there. Her calves were swollen and purplish. Besides, blood had drained out of her face.
She immediately put on a smile when she heard the door open. Then, her face instantly sank when she noticed it was me.
When she saw me, she quickly caught sight of the kiss marks on my neck. Her eyes narrowed, and she cursed me with hatred.
“Do you really think John loves you? You can’t snatch him away from me. Nobody can!”
I chuckled because of her words as a love-struck fool. It was hard to hold my chuckle.
“Believe it or not, John drove your dad to his death. Even as he died, your dad was only consumed with the worrying thought of John hurting you. When he had a heart attack, his body turned stiff. He was even holding a phone and calling 911 for you instead of himself. He was a great dad. He loved you more than his life.”
Lana’s sharp gaze wavered as she contemplated my words and got lost in her thoughts.
I crossed my arms and lazily leaned against the wall next to me.
“Stop thinking about it. You were on top of John’s body, texting me photos to declare war on me at that time.”
Then, I stopped looking at her pale face and left. While leaving, I got a text from John with unspeakable mockery.
[Miss Stone, you’re good at this. Are you trying to ruin me since you can’t win me over? Are you trying to make everyone leave me and make me end up all alone?]
Then, there was a video. I saw bodies swaying under the light and shameless moans from Lana…
I heard a tinkle. [Unfortunately, you’re going to be disappointed. She loves me deeply.]
I calmly looked at the screen and blocked his number.
Everyone was entitled to their destinies. I had done and said everything I could. Since Lana refused to believe me and willingly entrapped herself with the enemy who had killed her dad, I could not do anything about it.
John was calmer than I thought. All the detectives that I had hired gained nothing. He also managed to ostracize all my spies and put them in the lowest positions. I could not gain any evidence to defeat him.
Instead, he manipulated public opinion and made a comeback in a month. The stock price of his company rose by two percent.
Even the old-fashioned employees of the company could not pinpoint anything wrong. But it would get more difficult to defeat him if I let him continue on this endeavor.
It would be harder to get away from him.
When I was busy with stuff, a spy I sent texted me.
[Miss Stone, John got someone to deliver a big sack of things to Safe Auto Repair Shop. It seems to be full of his criminal record.]
I clenched my fists tightly, and my knuckles turned white from my effort. Worry overcame me.
But I still went there on the third night.
It was an auto repair shop in the suburbs with overgrown weeds and staggered trees. It seemed to be deserted for a few years.
I held the handle of the knife I hid in my sleeves and cautiously walked upstairs.
The night breeze was biting and cold, drying my shirt that was drenched with sweat. It made me shudder.
