Chapter 6

Dean felt uneasy under my gaze. After a while, he seemed to realize that I already knew what had happened. He then asked me whether he still had a chance.
I took out my phone and showed him the pictures. Whatever he'd planned to say died in his throat.
"You don't even love me any longer," I said calmly. "So why did you still seek me out? We could've just ended things quietly."
He replied, "I guess I'm being a bit sentimental. I think I still like you, but I also can't seem to resist my attraction for Erin."
"Is that why you want to satisfy us both with your… stamina?" I said in a deadpan.
Dean wasn't upset by my provocation. He merely smiled and said nothing.
I continued, "You always said you liked me because I was obedient, but Erin doesn't exactly fit that description. She's nowhere close to your ideal type, isn't she?"
He answered, "Maybe I like it when things are challenging?"
He was more candid now that things were out in the open.
"Maybe it's a guy thing. You kept telling me to keep a distance from her. It made me curious. Honestly, I didn't have to speak to her, but I still did."
Of course I said that. I did it so he'd accept her as soon as possible.
I kept my thoughts to myself and said, "You know what? I'll be nice since we were together for about six months, so don't say I didn't warn you. Erin has always dumped all my exes within a week.
"Apparently, she says it gets boring once she's won them over. The only person she really cares about is Eric. After all, he has spent a lot of money on her."
Dean frowned slightly as he stepped forward and grabbed my wrist. "Cassandra, it's weird, but it feels like you're pushing me to Erin."
My heart nearly leaped out of my throat. However, I kept my composure and said blandly, "You're imagining things. Do you think I want to be cheated on again? I'm already a joke in my family's eyes. My mother has even blocked me because of you."
He stared at me for a long time before finally releasing his grip on me. Then, he drawled ominously, "If that's the case, you'd best keep your head down. I don't think you'd like it very much if I find you interesting."
…
Dean started throwing money at Erin, and she enjoyed every second of it.
She texted me, bragging about how well Dean has been treating her. Then, she asked how I could let him slip through my fingers.
She even said, "You know I probably would've given him back to you once I'm bored with him if you continued to play dumb. What a shame. You'll probably never find another man with prospects as good as Dean's."
My reply was swift, "He's yours. I wasn't that into him anyway."
She texted back, "I've stolen so many of your boyfriends, but this is the first time I've realized how prideful you are."
I answered, "Do you really not see who the prideful one is between us?"
I ignored her completely after that. I didn't give her a single moment of my time, even when she texted me privately or tagged me in the family group chat.
After all, she had never been emotionally stable. I never really understood why she had such a volatile temper when she had it all.
Erin and I were close when we were kids.
We were the only young girls among our relatives. So, we spent all our time together. We read comics, did arts and crafts, and binge-watched shows together. We genuinely enjoyed each other's company.
Not only did we share the same preference for food, but we also had the same tastes when it comes to aesthetics. For years, we were inseparable.
Things changed when Aunt Abigail remarried.
She had married well for her second marriage. My new uncle, Arthur Thompson, was a businessman with several properties under his name.
He also had a son, Louis Thompson, who happened to be two years older than Erin and me.
He was a looker and a gentleman to boot. Everyone in the family loved him, including Erin and me.
Erin talked about him constantly. At the time, she probably didn't mean anything by it when she kept flaunting her seemingly perfect brother to me.
