Chapter 6

When Lucien pushed her hand away, her fangs slipped out before she even realized it.
I didn’t want to waste any more time.
I told them to sign the divorce papers.
Lucien suddenly grabbed my wrist.
He couldn’t get a full sentence out. His voice broke, uneven and rushed.
Ethan finally understood what his brother was trying to say and stepped in.
“I need to look into the arson case. I’ve got work to do,” he said.
“The person who report the case is in a hurry. We’ll set another time to talk.”
He glanced at Claire behind me, clearly trying to soften his tone, but authority came too naturally to him.
The brothers exchanged a look.
In the end, they chose not to suspect Vicky.
She had merely assumed that the person passing the cabin was a woman, and they told themselves they couldn’t accuse her without solid proof.
To them, the fire was still just an accident.
No matter how many doubts were laid out in front of them, they would always choose to trust Vicky.
Ethan turned to leave without waiting for our response, pulling Lucien with him.
I stopped them.
I took the police report receipt from my bag and placed it in front of him.
“I am the one who reported the case” I said calmly.
“I’m not in a hurry. You are signing the divorce papers today.”
Ethan snatched the document, checked the details, and his face changed instantly.
“Caroline… are you saying the fire was arson?”
“What exactly happened?”
Lucien’s expression hardened.
“I know you’re grieving,” he said,“but you can’t just accuse someone of arson.”
I almost admired his imagination.
He truly believed I would go to this length just because I was jealous.
Only then did I realize something clearly.
He had never respected me.
Not once.
And never our marriage.
“Do you really think I’d fake a police report to trick you?”I said in a steady voice.
“Who do you think you are?”
“I’m here to divorce you,” I continued.
“Not to win you back. Not to get gifts. Not to be comforted.”
“I’ve made myself clear,” I said.
“I want a divorce. Today. I’m in a hurry. Do you understand?”
Before I even finished, his eyes had already turned to his brother.
He was desperate for Ethan to back him up.
Desperate for him to say the report was fake.
Ethan only nodded stiffly.
“It’s real,” he said.
“The seal and case number are legitimate.”
Lucien forced himself to stay calm, but anger still leaked through.
“I understand you’re upset about losing the baby, Caroline,” he said.
“But I won’t take responsibility for an emotional decision.”
“You need to understand this,” he continued.
“Divorce isn’t something you can undo lightly.”
“We can always have another child. But once we divorce, don’t expect a second chance.”
“Don’t push it too far,” he said condescendingly.
“You can’t blame everything on me and drag my brother down with you.”
