There were many missed calls on my phone. I answered only Sophie.
She told me Jason was frantic; if I didn't show up he would call the police. I said I'd go.
I called Mark and said I was coming home. He arrived fast.

His voice was gentle: "Are you okay?" I nodded. As the car moved he asked, "Did she call you that night?" "Yes."
The car stopped and he looked in the rearview mirror.
"She called me too," he said quietly.
"I couldn't keep her." He said my name, earnest: "She called just to say goodbye. Don't blame yourself. Your sister wanted you to be happy more than anyone."
He was right.
She loved me so much.

How could she blame me? It was my own refusal to move on that trapped me.
