"I did nothing."
Lucas suddenly laughed.
"Ten years. Still lying through your teeth!"
He stood up, looking down at me coldly.
"Fine. Pay the price for what you did!"
With one glance from him, the Campbell family surrounded me again, hitting and cursing, their spit nearly drowning me.
Even worse, someone had posted what happened online, attracting a pack of hyena-like reporters who swarmed around me.
"Dr. Johnson! is it true that you, as a doctor, intentionally caused a patient’s death? Do you feel you’ve betrayed your oath and conscience?"
"We’ve heard this medical incident occurred because you and the patient were love rivals—is it true you deliberately caused the deaths of both mother and child?"
"Did you consider the consequences of being the other woman and causing the death of the wife and her child?"
The voices swarmed around me, and with the intense pain in my abdomen, my head felt like it was about to explode.
But I caught a key detail and suddenly looked up, grabbing the nearest reporter.
"What 'other woman'? What 'love rivals'?"
I was Lucas's girlfriend of ten years!
The reporter looked at me with contempt but pulled out his phone and opened an account.
"Didn't you know? Lucas and Vivian grew up together! They maintained a stable long-distance relationship for eight years! They'd be married if not for you, you homewrecking bitch!"
I snatched his phone from his hands and quickly scrolled through it. My eyes landed on a familiar diamond ring and an elaborately arranged hotel proposal.
In that moment, my vision went dark.
I'd seen that ring in Lucas's drawer before he left on his "business trip."
And the hotel reservation—I had always thought... I believed... it was for me. It felt natural, especially since I was carrying his child.
But I never imagined it was all just my own wishful thinking.
Trembling, I looked up at Lucas, suddenly calm, I locked eyes with him.
"Tell them the truth, Lucas. Vivian and me. Who was the other woman?"
In my memory, after the love letter incident, Lucas had always sought me out.
At first, I felt shy around him—after all, he was the one I loved. Seeing him always made me blush and want to hide.
Over time, we grew closer and became friends.
But even then, I knew deep down—we weren't meant to be together, not now, not ever.
Until my birthday, when Lucas handed me the same love letter.
I couldn't resist the advances of the one I loved, so I chose to be with him.
All these years, I thought marriage was the natural next step.
But only today did I realize that Lucas was with me, he never stopped loving Vivian.
Visiting her every year wasn’t enough—he'd planned to propose the moment she returned.
Trembling, I looked up, desperate for Lucas to give me an answer.
But without hesitation, he replied, "My fiancée has always been Vivian Campbell, from the very beginning!"
Branded as the other woman in public, the Campbells attacked with renewed fury, ignoring my bleeding body.
Lucas refused to help me, and I was outnumbered.
That day, I was rushed to a higher-level hospital for emergency treatment.
When I finally got out, the videos were everywhere. I was public enemy number one.
Surprisingly, Lucas came to pick me up on the day I was discharged.
Of course, I didn't trust he had good intentions, but he looked at me with cold mockery.
"Your parents are gonea nd you can’t go back to the hospital. Where else can you go?"
After a moment of silence, I got into his car.
After all, some things are better discussed at home.
But I never expected the "gift" waiting behind the door.
