Friends and family cheered, lifting the spirits of the gathering.
I thought he’d comply, but my arms ached while holding the cake, and he didn’t budge.
“I’m not a kid.Candles and wishes?Childish!”
He sat,sipping wine,glaring at me.
To ease the awkwardness,I turned to set the cake down.
Lily, who had just returned, gazed at him with teary eyes, cooing, “Kevin, it’s a special day. If you’ve no wish, make one for me.”
“Alright,I’ll make a wish for you,”he agreed, telling me to bring the cake.
Lily smirked mockingly, sidling up to him, looking pitiful.
My face paled.I dug my nails into my palm, not realizing they broke skin.
His pity for her grew, and he snapped,“Hurry up!”
“Fine!”I spun, heart steeled, and hurled the cake at his precious suit.
“Ah!Kevin,she didn’t mean it,”Lily shrieked.
My gaze turned icy. “No,I meant it.”
“What kind of wife does that?”my mother-in-law screeched like a shrew.
Now she acknowledges I’m his wife?I ignored her, yanking the watch off his wrist,my nails scratching his skin.
I tore down the wall’s congratulatory banner.
My husband and mother-in-law gaped,stunned.
They’d never seen me so cold,so unapproachable.
Humiliated,my husband stormed over,jabbing a finger.
“Are you insane?Over a candle?Really?”His eyes were wide with disbelief.
I sneered,“So you know you’re wrong but did it anyway.Think I’m that foolish?”
“You…”He was speechless, face red as liver.
His mother jumped in,pointing at my nose.“Ungrateful wretch! How have we wronged you? You’re just a receptionist. If not for your supposed acts of filial piety, I’d never have let you in!”
“Exactly. We’ve been married for years, no kids. Your parents didn’t even show up at the wedding, and you dare talk?”my husband piled on,desperate to save face.
Done arguing,I called security to escort them out.
“Us,leave?I know the hotel’s Mr.Foster.I’ll call him—see who leaves!”Lily smirked,dialing.
My husband and mother-in-law gloated, eager to see me humiliated.
He feigned generosity, saying,“Apologize now, and I’ll ask Lily to be lenient. You’ll lose face, and so will I. Deal?”
“No chance.”I smirked,eyes mocking.
His face darkened, and he shut up.
Minutes later,the hotel manager arrived.
“Mr.Foster,perfect timing.Kick this woman out,”Lily said,pointing at me boldly.
“I told you I know the boss. You’re finished!”
The boss?Did I get it wrong? Isn’t my dad the owner?
