“You lunatic!”she shrieked, dodging, but shards cut her leg.
Nurses rushed in at the crash.
“I’m the lunatic?”Derek roared.“You blew our savings!How could I not lose it?”
“You leech,I break my back, and you waste it!”
Miranda, collapsed, wailed,“Blame me?I’ve run this house alone! How dare you?”
Mason,spoiled tyrant at home,cowered,sobbing.
Patients peeked into the chaotic room.
Doctors and nurses intervened to stop the fight.
As Miranda ranted,a doctor’s words silenced them.
“Your son’s eyes are sick.Didn’t you notice?”
A nurse,pitying Mason’s cries,saw his eerie eyes up close.
Miranda screeched,“Impossible!He’s awakening!”
“Sick?”the nurse snapped, her voice sharp with frustration.“His eyes are failing—he’ll go blind soon.Irresponsible parents!”
Derek frowned.“Doctor,what’s this about?”
The doctor sighed, snapping a photo.“I’m no specialist, but it’s a clear issue.Nurse, take him to Dr.Ellis.I’ll send this to our expert group.”
The nurse led Mason out.
“Lies!”Miranda cried.“He’s chosen by the gods—he can’t be sick!”
Derek,embarrassed,tried pulling her up.
She lunged at the doctor, her nails digging into his collar, screaming hysterically.
Nurses restrained her.“Calm down!He’s sick!”
Miranda shoved one, cursing,“You’re all charlatans! He’s awakening!”
A nurse whispered to the doctor, who adjusted his collar.“Ma’am,trust science. Our equipment is top-notch—we’ll give you answers.”
He left.
Miranda collapsed to the floor, her hands clawing at her hair as she wailed uncontrollably.
The hospital kept her contact, noting their eye specialist was away, and Mason needed to stay for tests.
Miranda nodded,dazed,but penniless—no surgery fees,no hospital costs.
She turned to me.
I’d graduated with an Ivy League degree, secured a job at a tech firm, and was still in my internship.
Miranda called.“Jenna,I’m strapped. You’re working—can you loan me some cash?”
Eyes on my screen,I rolled out my script.“Miranda,it’s not that I don’t want to help. But my degree’s from a no-name college—my job barely covers rent.”
I sighed.“Living with you was a burden,so I moved out,and now rent’s killing me…”
She cut in,“No loan?Fine,stop whining!”
As she moved to hang up,I stopped her.“Wait!I’ve got something important.”
