The day before we were set to get our marriage license,my boyfriend,Nathan Brooks, secretly bought a house.
He drained all his savings, including the money meant to give me as my dowry and the the gold jewelries we brought for our wedding.
He said it was to match his social status and to give us an extra safe haven, after all the house would be ours after marriage.

I laughed, then went out and spent$50,000 apart from a loan to buy an apartment as well. But when Nathan found out,he was furious.
...
"Baby, can you lend me some cash?I'm a bit tight this month,"Nathan's message popped up.
"Didn't you just get your paycheck?"
I texted back, confused.Nathan was a programmer at a big tech firm in Boston,earning$15,000 a month after tax.
It was mid-month,right after payday. Why was he asking to borrow money now?

"Baby,I bought a house!We'll have our own home now!"Nathan replied,sending a photo.
I clicked to enlarge it and nearly spat out my coffee.
Without discussing it with me,Nathan had bought a 1,200-square-foot,three-bedroom house for$400,0000.
He had already paid 50%down and had a monthly mortgage of$9,500.Buying a house is great, but doing it right before our wedding? What was he thinking?

We met through a blind date.I thought our relationship was solid.We're both 28,I'm a designer,he's a programmer.
Despite our different careers,we shared many hobbies.
I found Nathan thoughtful and caring. After dating for a while,we fell in love.
Since we're not exactly young anymore, our parents met a month ago and agreed on a$12,000 dowry and an extra $5,000 to buy me gold jewelries.
The wedding was set for next month.Today was Thursday, and tomorrow,a lucky day,we planned to take half a day off to get our marriage license.
Why would Nathan buy a house behind my back at a time like this?Anyone could see his intentions.
"What about the dowry and gold jewelries?"I messaged back.
"Baby,I'm so broke I need to borrow money for food this month.Where would I get extra cash?I bought the house for our future! With a house We have ensurance, money we can earn back sooner or later.Besides, you're not a vain person, right? We can skip the dowry and your jewelries, keep the wedding simple,or even do a travel wedding.Didn't you always want to travel?"
Nathan sent a barrage of messages. What he was up to so blatant I could practically hear his thoughts through the phone.
He made a huge decision like buying a house without even consulting me.
A house bought now would be his premarital property. With his$15,000 salary and the mortage each month,he'd barely cover his own expenses.
We weren't even married now,and he was already asking money from me for his living expenses.
After marriage, wouldn't I be stuck with all the bills?Worse,he had the nerve to guilt-trip me,calling me vain because I wanted the dowry and jewelries we had already agreed on?He even suggested a travel wedding, entirely excluding our relatives, which means money saved not having to hold a feast.
Speaking of travel,I remembered something. When we first started dating,I had just finished a job and suggested we take a trip together.
Nathan complained about expensive flights and peak-season hotel prices.
We went, but he was grumpy the whole time.
I ended up covering 70%of the costs before he cheered up.I thought he was just frugal, and since I'd always been a bit of a spender,I figured that with his habits to balance me our we would make a great couple.
But then I noticed he would drop thousands on gaming gear without blinking. He wasn't frugal—he was just selfish.
