She wore a white tee and a denim skirt, just like she used to. Nathan froze at the sight of her.
Hah.
I knew this routine..
He used to see Lily in me wearing that outfit.
Now,who did he see in her?
“Not inviting me in?Nathan,I want to discuss our marriage.Y our mom says we've been dragging our feet too long.”
Nathan stunned her with his words: "Lily, it's over between us." Lily stared, incredulous.“Why?”
“I finally see my heart.I treated Claire as your substitute, but I was wrong.Claire was always Claire. My feelings for you were just a reflection of my own unwillingness to let go.”
“I always loved her. When you returned, I couldn't face the truth.”
I stood rooted to the spot, speechless.
Was he out of his mind? I wasn't some toy he could love, discard for divorce, and then love again in some grand romantic gesture. Lily's hands trembled. "Nathan, Claire's death must be hitting you hard. Can we talk about marriage later?" I didn’t want to hear these two bicker.
They treated me like a prop in their drama.
Disgusting.
I went inside,stroking Daisy’s glossy fur.
Suddenly,pain hit my back.
Several teenage girl ghosts were attacking me.
“Wait! Why are you hitting me?I didn’t do anything wrong!”
I yelled,furious.
One, with blood-red eyes, glared at me murderously. "You didn't do anything wrong? You killed your sister, you know that?"
Confused,I stared at them.
“Your sister didn’t know us,but we’d haunt her bed for energy. She sought help from someone who revealed our presence. They offered her a way to banish us, but she chose not to. She burned incense to feed us, saying we had it tough too." “Right.Your sister was kind.We followed her to protect her.One day,we found a system bound to her.”
Our world was a sweet romance novel,Chasing Her Heart.
It ended happily when Nathan won me over, and we got married.
But the system informed Grace the unwritten epilogue was tragic.
Nathan would abandon me for his unattainable first love.
Grace’s task was to save me, to stop me from clinging to Nathan, to help me find happiness on my own.
My world collapsed.
No wonder Grace opposed Nathan’s pursuit.
No wonder she said fate’s gifts had hidden costs. No wonder she urged me to leave at the first sign of trouble, before his love faded.
No wonder she got bone cancer during our divorce talks—failing her task meant death.
I grabbed a ghost in a panic. “Where’s Grace’s soul?” She sneered.“Your sister died by the system, not naturally. She has no soul. She’s gone from this world.”
“It’s your fault. If you weren’t so lovesick, would she have died?”
“She wasn’t even your real sister, yet died for you.”
They beat me again.
I was numb.
