Usually, people just wave away salespeople in the plaza or simply ignore them.
Before Rachel or her boss could speak,I snapped,“Are you a scammer?Get lost,we’re not buying anything.”
Jessica didn’t skip a beat.“We’re with SafeGuard Insurance,a trusted name.Wait—you look familiar.Do you know Mrs.Clarkson,the CEO’s wife?She threw a big baby shower last month.”
I’d given Jessica that little piece of information in advance.
Rachel’s boss, thinking Jessica knew the elite, smiled.“Oh,you were at her shower?”
Jessica sidestepped,“SafeGuard works with her and her husband’s company…”
Soon,we were in a coffee shop.Jessica’s sales prowess had both pregnant women hooked.
“The jewelry store owner and that actress bought this policy?”
“You get $20,000 right after birth, with no strings attached? And it covers nine years of top - tier private school, so you don’t have to fight for a spot?”
“Sounds pretty good…”
Seeing them waver,I pointed at the priciest policy, feigning awe.“This one’s over $200,000.I’d have to wash dishes my whole life to afford that…”
Jessica, playing her part, swatted my hand, sliding the contract to Rachel’s boss.“Leos breed Leos. This policy’s for the elite. The private school we arrange isn’t for just anyone.”
She ignored Rachel, pitching only to her boss.
When Rachel asked about it,Jessica sneered,“This isn’t for everyone. You can’t turn a sommon sparrow into a phoenix if you don’t have the means.”
Rachel, already stung by her boss, bristled.“Who do you think you are, looking down on me?It’s just $200,000—not that much!”
Jessica reeled her in,passing the contract with a condescending glance.“Fine,look.You can’t afford it anyway.”
I chimed in,“Rachel,don’t even bother.It’s too expensive.We can’t afford it.Her boss is different—her kid’s different.She can buy it,send her kid to that fancy school…”
Rachel glared, snapping,“You’re useless, not me! $200,000?I can easily handle it!”
With Jessica playing bad cop and me the good,Rachel soon signed the contract, smugly transferring a $100,000 deposit in front of her boss.
Her boss,only slightly better off,couldn’t afford it.She forced a smile,praising Rachel’s generosity.
Rachel preened.“$200,000’s nothing. My son’s going to an elite school, rubbing elbows with the upper crust!”
“He’ll be a star, earning that back in a month with his education and connections, unlike you ordinary workers.”
