In her fury, she even slapped Chloe lightly—but nothing like the blows I got.
I was just watched the drama unfold, until it suddenlt involved me.
Chloe scrambled over to me on her knees.“Sarah, you have to save me.I know a rich guy—he is my classmate and his family owns five or six factories. His mom desperate for grandchildren,so he’s looking for someone to marryThe dowry alone is a million.Marry him for me,please!”
I feigned thoughtfulness.“Why don’t you marry him?You are the one who crashed the car.You should be the one to marry.”
Mom reacted the most violently, jumping up from the ground..“How could you compare yourself to your sister! She’s got a rich boyfriend, loaded. She’s going to marry abroad one day. We’re setting you up with a good match, and instead of being grateful, you’re making sarcastic remarks? You ungrateful wretch!”
I countered,“If her boyfriend’s so rich, why not ask him for the money?”
Dad stepped in to lecture me,“They’re not even engaged. You can’t just ask for money like that. It’s a long game!”
They acted so convincing.
But there was no Ferrari crash.
This was all a trap they’d set for me.
In my past life,I’d fallen right into it,marrying at 18,skipping college, and was eventually beaten to death.
Meanwhile they’d hidden their ten-million-yuan fortune from me for 25 years.
Now, with their factories in trouble and desperate for investors.
They were scheming to use me as a pawn.
If I didn’t play along,I’d ruin their scheme.
I pretended to hesitate,then agreed.
Their prepared speeches went unused.
Chloe squinted.“You’re really okay with it?”
I shrugged.“I’ve never been in a relationship.If you’re introducing me to a rich guy, why wouldn’t I say yes?”
Mom nodded.“Good.See,education does make you smarter.”
Dad nodded approvingly.
Chloe had nothing left to say.
Worried I might back out,mom had Chloe call the guy to meet me.
She even handed me 30 yuan.“Go buy some groceries.”
I tossed it back.“What, begging money? My future husband’s coming, and you skimp on food?30 yuan won’t even buy half a chicken.Get more,or you go buy it yourself.I won’t humiliate myself like this.”
Mom cursed,“If you don’t learn to save money, how will you survive in your husband’s household?”
I frowned.“You said he’s rich.Rich people don’t care about thirty yuan. When sister buys a thirty-yuan coffee, you don’t say a word. Mom, Dad, you’re always crying poverty, yet you always have money for her.Dad’s a janitor, and you’re a maid. Combined, you make maybe 8000 yuan a month. You told me all my life how poor we were—yet you took sister to Disneyland. Mom, are we really poor?”
I smirked.“I saw this joke online:My parents raised me in poverty for eighteen years—turns out they’re millionaires!’ Mom,you’re not, are you?”
I stared at her pointedly.
Mom’s lips twitched,a guilty tell.
