I hadn’t expected Ryan to win her over so fast.
Or maybe they were both racing towards each other.
“Ugh,yeah,Ryan liked Emma before,but he told me it was just a casual thing.”
“After getting to know me,he realized I’m his soulmate.”
“So,I’m not taking Emma’s boyfriend,right?”
“She didn’t want him.A guy this good—she passed,so someone else can have him.”
“Better me than a stranger,since I’m your roommate,right?”
Sophie’s guilt vanished,replaced with a sense of entitlement.
I’d seen through her long ago,so I stayed silent.
But her antics left Claire speechless.
Though I didn’t like Ryan,he’d openly pursued me,he had sent flowers just yesterday.Now Sophie was with him?
Claire couldn’t get her head around it.
“Sophie,you and Ryan just met,and you’re already dating?”
“You know he pursued Emma for two months.”
Sophie,mid-sip,contentedly chewing pearls,darkened at Claire’s words.
“Claire,what do you mean by that?”
“Didn’t you say yesterday Ryan offered to buy you a smoothie?”
“Are you into him too,jealous now that we’re together?”
Her accusation turned Claire’s face red with anger.
“You!”
“He offered the smoothie to bring up Emma’s flowers up!”
“What are you going on about?”
Sophie rolled her eyes.
“You know whether you’re lying.”
Claire was speechless.I picked up a new YSL lipstick and approached Sophie.
“Sophie,Claire didn’t mean it that way.”
“Here,take this lipstick.The bright red you wore today doesn’t suit you—guys prefer softer shades like rose.”
She didn’t respond but quietly accepted the lipstick.
Over the next few months,Sophie being skipped classes more frequently.
At first,she paid for substitutes,but soon spent everything on her appearance—swapping her worn-out jeans for a cotton white dress,letting her hair down.
Claire and I noticed but said nothing.
One weekend,I met my brother to have dinner.
Being a high school senior,he ate decently at school,but I occasionally treated him to something nice.
He held the restaurant door open for me.As I was stepping in,I ran into Sophie.
She no longer looked like a poor rural girl,but her manners betrayed her lack of refinement.
Ryan stood beside her,his fake smile chilled me.
His gaze lingered on me for a second,sending a shiver down my spine.
“Sis,are you okay?”
My brother,noticing my unease,patted my shoulder gently.
Sophie,seeing a handsome teen in a school uniform close to me,stood there agape.
“Ryan,told you~”
“Emma’s a total gold-digger,even going after young guys now!”
