The child's food poisoning incident disrupted the banquet,and the restaurant faced complaints.
Claire,sobbing,confronted me.
"Sophie,why couldn't you come up with a better lie?You've ruined the restaurant's reputation!"
I slapped her again,hard,leaving a handprint.
She shrieked,clutching her face.
"It was the truth!Why'd I hit you?What if there hadn't been enough time?Let everyone get poisoned?If someone died,would you take responsibility?"
Claire,speechless,just cried.
What a useless fool!All she does is cry.
The restaurant needed fish,but she bought chicken in bulk,forcing the cancellation of a full-fish banquet that customers had booked.She sobbed,saying if someone had reminded her,it wouldn't have happened.
She left items that needed refrigeration outside,and they all spoiled the next day.The entire kitchen staff lost a month's bonus because of it.She cried again,saying she didn't want to drag us down,as if someone else should have put the items in the fridge.
If we have to do everything ourselves,what's she here for?To cry?
The sous-chef looked at me disapprovingly, frowning.
"Sophie,ease up.Claire's just a newbie."
"Besides,"he continued,"she's right.The restaurant has indeed suffered significant damage."
"She's right?"I scoffed."If everyone got poisoned today,the restaurant would be shut down,and we'd be in jail!"
The sous-chef's face paled,and he shut up.
Ethan,after reporting to management,rushed over.
Seeing Claire in tears,he snapped at me.
"Sophie Evans,what's wrong with you?Who gave you permission to hit Claire?"
"If anything happens to her,you're fired!"
Claire leaned into Ethan's arms,eyes teary,looking pitiful.
"It was just a newbie mistake.Why hit me?Even my mom never hit me!"
I nearly laughed.
"A newbie mistake?You call dozens of lives a'small mistake'?"
Claire flinched,looking tearfully at Ethan.
"Ethan,please believe me.I didn't mean it."
Ethan hugged her gently,then roared at me.
"Enough!Yes,dozens of lives were at risk,but no one actually died,did they?"
"You're just jealous of Claire,trying to ruin her.Have some shame!"

His audacity stunned me.
"Who gave you the nerve to say that?You're my fiancé—look who's in your arms!"
"As the head chef,when something goes wrong,you don't investigate—you protect the culprit.Who's shameless?"
My bluntness made Ethan's face darken.After a long silence,he accused me.
"How did you know there was something wrong with the food so quickly?Did you know beforehand,pointing it out publicly to humiliate Claire?"
"As a senior,you're so selfish,stopping at nothing to suppress a newbie!"
Before he finished,I slapped him hard.
"Bullshit!Don't pin this on me—I'm not taking the fall!"
"Procurement records,food storage—everything's documented!When they check,it will be clear whose fault it is!"
