"Carly?" It was Kayn. "I know you're in there!"
He had to be pissed a great deal after what I had said to his sister.
"I need to talk to you." The knocking turned to a banging on the door. "Carly, open up, damn it!"
I stood rooted, not sure what to do. "Go away, Kayn."
"I'm not leaving until I get to talk to you," he continued. "So help me, I will break down this door if I have to. You know I can. Don't test me."
"Resorting to threats now?" I snapped. "Just go away, I don't want to see any of you."
Regardless of my threatening words, my hands shook as I rubbed my bare arms.
"Carly…" he gritted. He stopped pounding on the door and fell silent.
"Please, just go away," my voice sounded weak. "I meant what I said to Ember."

I closed my eyes, sucking back another sob. I wondered if I ever was going to stop crying.
"You know it's for the best," I added.
"I know." He fell quiet.
"Then go. Don't make this any more difficult than it already is."
"Carly, open this door," he ordered.
"No."
"So help me…"
"Just go away!"
He didn't respond. I waited and waited, but nothing. I toed toward the door to peek through the curtain, to find he was gone.
I slumped my shoulders, relieved, but at the same time, I couldn't push away the disappointment. I thought he would have put up a bigger fight than Ember.
Not that it was what I wanted. But…
I didn't know what I wanted at this point.
I slumped forward, pressing my forehead to the door, and fell into another fit of sobs. A big part of me wished my parents never brought us here.
I wished I didn't feel like this.
I wished—
The caravan gave one, quick, violent shake. I stumbled backward, in time to spot movement through the roof window. Not a second later, it flipped open, and a figure slipped through.
