Chapter 28 Surprise

Someone shook me. "Carly, dear?"
"Ow!" With my eyes closed, I tried to push the relentless hands away. "What do you want from me?"
"It's time to go home sweetheart. Your boyfriend is here to take you home."
Boyfriend?
I didn't have a boyfriend.
My eyes flew open, and I cringed. A blinding, white light illuminated through the imposing, open windows. "What the...?"
"Give her a moment to wake up," the woman said. "She'll likely be a bit out of it during the day, but she'll come around. It'll work out of her system, so don't you worry."
"Sure," a familiar voice responded.
There was a movement beside me as I forced my eyes open a second time, rubbing them until they came into focus.
The first thing I saw was Kayn standing by the foot of the bed, his arms crossing his chest. It was troublesome to acknowledge how glorious he looked. "Good morning, sunshine."
I blinked a few more times, trying to process the situation. It took a moment for me to process where I was, how I got here, and why Kayn was here.
"Are you awake sweetheart?" the nurse tested beside my bed. She was holding a cup of water inside her hand.
"Yeah," I grumbled, pushing myself up.
"Good." She handed me the cup of water and stuffed a cocktail of pills inside my hand. "Drink up. Vitamins and something for the pain."
"Who knows, you might fly again," Kayn commented. "With shush."
"Shut up. My head hurts." I forced down the pills and drank the water.
When I was done, the nurse took the cup from me and turned to glance at Kayn.
"We're done here. When your girlfriend is ready you can take her home."
I was in the process of trying to sit up and smacked my knee into the metal cabinet beside the bed.
I gasped in pain, reaching down at my knee. "I'm not his girlfriend," I gritted, massaging the throbbing lump.
Kayn turned toward the nurse. "Do I need to sign her out or something?"
The nurse waved him off. "Her mother already took care of it."
"Okay," he watched the nurse walking toward the door. "Thank you."
"You're welcome loves," she smiled, peering in Kayn's direction. "Take care of your girl, alright?"
"I'm not his—" I started, but the nurse had already walked out. When I turned to look at Kayn, he was staring at me.
"Jackass."
"That's not what you said last night," he responded.
I glared at him. "I thanked you and I meant it. Doesn't mean you gained my favor."
"Is that so?" he smirked. "Do you remember the part where you told me you loved me?"
My cheeks grew hot. "Now we both know you're lying."
"Don't believe me?" A dark brow arched and he nodded toward the door. "Go ask the nurse what you said to me."
"Whatever," I waved him off, turning my back on him, and straightened my hair. On the inside, I wanted to die.
Did I really say that?
What else did I say?
Dread rose inside me. "When did my parents leave? And did the cops say anything else?"
"Everyone left last night," Kayn answered. "As for the cops, nothing they didn't say to you."
"Oh."
Kayn remained silent for a moment as I toed on my converse sneakers. When I reached for my hair again, that was when he asked, "Who's Jason?"
There was a sudden burst of pain inside my skull as I flung around too quickly.
I cried out in disgust, pressing a hand to my forehead. "What did you say?"
"Jason. You said he lied to you," Kayn continued. "You kept talking about how he humiliated you at some dance. Left you for another girl he knew you didn't like."
"I did not tell you that," I exclaimed.
"Yeah, you did."
"When?"
"Right after everyone left."
My eyes bulged. I realized he was wearing the same clothes he wore last night and his hair messier than usual. "How long were you here, exactly?"
He shrugged, pointing toward a chair in the corner of the room. "It was too much of an effort to go back to the island, sleep for four hours, and then come back again. So I crashed over there. The nurse said it was fine."
I felt myself lose the color in my face.
"You talked," he said. "A lot."
I wanted to die.
I whimpered under my breath, sitting down on the bed. I considered my words, but I knew there wasn't a fluffy version of the events I'd rather forget.
"Jason is some jerk who made me think he liked me and asked me out to a school dance. Long story short, he ditched me in front of the entire school, called me vile names, and then asked the girl who made my life a living hell to be his date instead."
Kayn looked away. "He's trash. You didn't deserve that."
"I don't deserve a lot of things," I said. "Like the way you've treated me."
"I'm not proud of it."
My brows raised. "So you admit to being a complete prick?"
He didn't answer.
"What else did I say?" I asked. "You know what, please don't tell me. This whole thing is degrading enough as it is. Can we go now?"
I got up and as I did the world began to sway. I stumbled sideways, onto the same metal cabinet I knocked my knee against earlier and grabbed hold of it. "Oh, how wonderful."
Kayn sighed, walking over to my side and reached around my waist.
I pulled away, scowling. "I can walk myself, thanks."
"No, you can't," he said. "Let me help you."
When the horrible spinning sensation didn't go away, I gave in. "Fine."
Kayn looped an arm around my waist and allowed me to balance my weight against him, waiting for me until I was ready to walk.
"You're never going to let me live this down, are you?" I asked.
"I will," he said. "Only because you said you loved me."
My cheeks grew so hot I had no doubt he could see it. I whimpered under my breath as we put of the hospital room.
