Chapter 7

Next morning I woke to an empty bed.

A message from Alaric: "Gone to Edinburgh for business."

Sleep abandoned me. I just lay there, staring at the ceiling.

Around 10, my phone rang.

The wedding dress Alaric had ordered six months ago was ready. When could I come for a fitting?

I didn't ask for delivery. Went myself instead.

The dress was French haute couture. Nine million pounds.

Designer Camille herself attended to me.

"You and Mr. Thornfield have been together for quite some time?"

"Yes. Ten years now."

"From high school sweethearts to bride and groom—truly a fairy tale."

Just then, a sickeningly sweet voice cut through the air.

"Well, if it isn't little Aria!"

It was Lisa, the twenty-something daughter of some real estate tycoon, Beta bloodline.

"My, my, all alone today? Where's your precious Alaric?"

"Such an important milestone as trying on wedding dresses, and he couldn't be bothered to join you?"

Lisa covered her mouth in mock surprise.

"Don't tell me Alaric's finally come to his senses about marrying a human?"
