Kate's POV

I was on my out of my room to have breakfast when an unknown number called me, and had me walking back into the room,

"Hello? " I said uncertainly into the receiver, but rather than receive a response, the individual kept breathing into the phone. I frowned and was nearly about to end the call when the person finally said something,

"Am I speaking to Kate?" the person asked, it was a man and his voice sounded like broken glass,

"Yes, who am I speaking to?" I asked, my brows drawn together in a frown,

"My identity isn't important right now. All that matters is what I know, and what I'm sure you would like to know as well."

"what do you have to tell me that you deem important at the moment? Be quick, I don't have the time for fooling around."

"Oh, you would have the time for this one. I'll bet anything that you've grown sick and tired of your beloved mate going around and seeing his ex-luna. Or are you not?"

"his ex- what the hell are you talking about?" I asked sharply. It was the idea of Ember that really had me willing to fight to be very honest.

"ahh…" the person said, sounding amused, "I knew that would do the trick."

"Alright, you listen to me, right now. If you are just over there playing with me, oh so help you, God, you're going to be sorry you ever found your way to call me up."

The person gave a light chuckle and I was going to end the call when he added, "Relax, relax. I'm just trying to enjoy this one. But you should know, I thought you let you know that your beloved mate is on his way to see Ember as we speak."

"how do you know he is going to see her?" I asked wearily, not liking the idea one bit,

"Because I'm following him, and it just so happens, that every route he's taken so far only leads to her office."

"why the hell are you even following him?" I asked, appalled at the idea of someone following Paris.

"Well, for a moment such as this one. Is it not obvious?"

I heaved out a breath, trying to think of the next line of action, "you're sure he is going to see Ember?" I asked,

"he is." he said and I heard the smile in his voice, "is there something you want me to do about it?"

"Stop him," I said firmly, and there was a quiet pause,

"how do you mean, miss?"

"I don't know. Just makes sure he doesn't get to see her. Better yet, stop her. I don't know how you mean to get it done. But whatever it is you must do, don’t let them get together!" I said angrily,

!I can manage that. But you have to know that this won’t be free of charge. I mean, I won’t charge you for the information I've provided. But, I do require a service fee, for trying to keep those two apart. And I must tell you, that's quite hard, considering how relentless the Alpha can be. But well, you already know this."

I merely rolled my eyes, "Make sure you do something. And I'll get the money to you, after which you must disappear. Because I want this to be the last time you ever try to stalk my mate. Have I made myself clear?"

There was a pause once again, before the man responded, "Crystal."

PARIS'S POV

I didn't know what reason I had exactly for doing this, it was more of a spur-of-the-moment thing. But I really felt like I stayed away from Ember long enough.

Perhaps it was Jean's audacity. After all, the man was doing something that endangered his relationship with Ember. He wasn't afraid of the outcome of her finding out, whatever that was. Instead, he was doing the thing he felt was right.

It was high time I did the same, which meant that I was completely done with staying away from Ember as often as I did. She was going to bark and bite when I suddenly appeared at her workplace, but at least somewhere within her, it would register that I was doing the best I could to get her back. Just like Jean, I would be doing the thing I felt was right.

I hated the guy, but the lesson was a damn fine one if you asked me.

I was parked outside for a while and waited until I saw her coming out before I made any move. She carried her bags, so I could deduce it was the end of her workday, and when I saw her coming closer to my car, I got out and started to move toward her.

I stopped when she stopped and began to look around her confusion. It was the confusion that turned to shock that had me running toward her, and calling out her name,

"Ember!" I shouted and she had a split second to look at me with more confusion, before I pushed her aside, and felt the weight of hard metal falling over me.

"Paris? Oh my gosh, Paris!" Ember called out, and then was at my side, pushing the large metal rod that had fallen over me from off me.

I swear everything hurts like hell.

"Are you okay? Dear goddess, I have no idea where that had come from! I had no idea you were here?"

"call 911," I said in a croaked voice. Even speaking had me feeling like I had broken something and those broken bones were poking at muscles and tendons. I was entirely too sore and felt cold sweat breaking out on my forehead

"Okay. Okay." she said, kneeling beside me, and gingerly placed my head in her lap, "stay with me, Okay? Just stay with me." she said, sounding desperate and I was sorry I made her worry that way,

"Whatever you say, sugar," I responded, but I was fighting the urge to simply lack out.

"Hello?" I heard her desperately say into her phone, but whatever else she might have said was completely lost on me because I eventually lost the fight for my consciousness.

I woke up in a white room, listening to the sound of machines beeping, and heard an indistinct male voice,

"He's very strong, and his broken bones have healed with speed. The x-ray report also assures us that his ribs are intact. He'll wake up soon enough, his body is just demanding its own rest."

"thank you, doctor. I'll be here if he needs anything. Thank you." It was a woman's voice. But not the woman I wanted or even expected it to be. It was Kate's voice.

"No problem. Try and get your rest as well. You need to be your best, to be what he needs you know?"

"I know," she said, and I heard a follow-up sound of the door being closed,

I slowly opened my eyes and turned to find Kate peering down at me, worry evident in her expression,

"Hey, warrior. Welcome back," she said softly, and I closed my eyes once again, ready to sink into oblivion.

I had been with Ember. Ember had been the one who called the paramedics, so where could she have been? How could she have let me with Kate?

"Paris? How do you feel? Do you need anything? Are you in pain? The doctor just left, but I can get him back."

"I don't need anything." I grumbled out slowly, then turned to look at her, "But why are you here?" I asked, and she looked at me somewhat confused,

"what do you mean why am I? You got hurt. Where else would I be?"

“You weren’t there when I got injured.” I said and considered asking if it was Ember who brought me here and if she had indeed been the one to bring me here, where had she wandered off to?

“But I’m here now. Isn’t that enough?”

“That’s not the question. This isn’t a matter of if your presence is enough or not. What exactly happened?”

I remembered the crashing metal very well. What I wanted to know was what had happened after. Why was I waking up to Kate and not to Ember.

“You got into an accident. You got hit by something heavy I guess. A few broken ribs, but they have mended pretty nicely.”

That only answers one part of my question and not necessarily the part I was desperate to know if I was being honest.

"And you? How did you find out? You weren’t at the sight of my disaster and I sure as helI didn't ask anyone to call you, neither were you on my first call of contact in case of an emergency, so how did you know I was in the hospital?"
