Chapter 5

There was a prolonged silence on the other end of the phone.

Then, Adrian's voice came through with violent trembling that he himself hadn't even noticed.

"What nonsense are you talking about? An explosion? Impossible!"

His tone suddenly rose, filled with disbelief.

"How could she possibly have remained inside?"

"Wasn't she the one who always knew how to save herself?! Where are the people I left there? Are they all useless? Didn't they know to drag her out?"

"Mr. Locke..."

The assistant's voice was filled with despair:

"The fire was started by Madam herself who detonated the backup power supply."

"Perhaps... she never intended to survive from the beginning."

The assistant paused, then continued the report reluctantly.

"Those people you left behind, they saw that Madam had thoroughly angered you, and they thought you never wanted to see her again."

"So before the fire spread, they... they had all already evacuated."

Adrian's breath suddenly caught, his mind instantly going blank.

His tall figure staggered backward uncontrollably.

He turned abruptly, ready to rush out. At that moment, he had only one thought in his mind, and that was to find her.

He didn't believe she could have died so easily.

"Adrian!"

Vanessa suddenly clutched her chest and blocked his way, her voice aggrieved.

"You swore before the gods that you would love only me in this life! But look at yourself now!"

"You're getting this anxious over another woman! Tell me, have you fallen in love with her?"

In the past, seeing her tears would have left Adrian completely distressed.

He once thought that the one thing he couldn't bear most in this life was seeing Vanessa cry.

But at this moment, the familiar feeling of pity didn't surface. Instead, he felt inexplicably irritated.

Mira's eyes, filled with pain yet incredibly stubborn, which hadn't shed a single tear until the very end, uncontrollably occupied all his thoughts.

When he ordered accelerant to be poured on her paintings, when she was forcibly injected with abortion drugs, she bit her lip bloody, refusing to cry even once.

Vanessa tried to burrow into his embrace as she had done in the past, clinging to him for comfort.

But Adrian's arms remained incredibly stiff, no longer able to hold her back.

The stagnation and vexation in his heart grew increasingly heavy.

He finally looked away, his tone cold.

"Vanessa, calm down, don't make a scene at a time like this. No matter what, Mira is still my wife, and she might be in trouble. I must go back and check on her."

"She is not!"

Vanessa screamed jealously:

"Have you forgotten? When you thought she kidnapped me, you already threw the divorce agreement in her face to force her to talk! You have no relationship with her anymore! I forbid you to go!"

Seeing her throwing a tantrum, Adrian's brows furrowed deeply.

Yet what flashed through his mind was how I had never bent my proud spirit even in the most desperate situations.

This stark contrast made him feel annoyed with Vanessa for the first time in his life.

Disturbed and irritated, he roughly pushed away the woman in his arms and left without looking back.

Even as Vanessa cried and screamed heartbreakingly behind him, he never once paused.
