Chapter 26: Revelation

Jack and I waited in an adjacent office, watching through one-way glass. My hands trembled slightly, and Jack covered them with his own.
"Having second thoughts?" he asked quietly.
I shook my head. "Just ready for this to be over."
The boardroom door burst open, and Michael strode in, his usual confidence replaced by barely contained fury. Mia Brown was conspicuously absent.
"What is the meaning of this emergency meeting?" he demanded.
"Michael, please sit down," the chairman said gravely. "Serious allegations have been brought to our attention."
"By whom?" Michael snapped.
The chairman nodded toward the side door. "I believe you should hear directly from the source."
That was our cue. Jack squeezed my hand once before we entered together. The collective gasp from the board members was audible as they recognized Jack Thompson—and wondered about the woman at his side.
"Mr. Thompson," Michael said coldly. "I should have known you were behind this coup attempt."
"Not a coup," Jack replied calmly. "Just bringing truth to light."
Michael's eyes narrowed as they fixed on me. "And who exactly is your companion?"
I stepped forward, my voice steady. "Many of you knew me as Rachel Williams."
The boardroom erupted in shocked murmurs. One elderly board member actually crossed himself.
"This is preposterous," Michael sputtered. "My wife died three years ago. This woman is an impostor."
"Am I?" I asked, approaching the table. I placed a folder in front of each board member. "Inside you'll find DNA confirmation of my identity, along with medical records documenting my recovery after Michael pushed me from our anniversary cruise."
"She's lying!" Michael shouted, slamming his fist on the table. "This is a coordinated attack!"
The chairman opened his folder, scanning the contents with alarm. "These financial documents... are they authentic?"
"Every page," Jack confirmed. "Systematic embezzlement, offshore accounts, falsified reports to shareholders."
"I can explain—" Michael began, but was cut off.
"There's a recording here," the chairman said, holding up a USB drive.
I nodded. "You should listen to it."
The chairman played the recording of Mia Brown detailing Michael's financial crimes and his attempt to murder me, followed by Michael's own words from our confrontation the previous day.
As it ended, the boardroom fell silent. Michael looked around wildly.
"Where is Mia Brown?" he demanded. "I want to face my accuser."
"Ms. Brown is meeting with the district attorney," Jack replied. "She's been offered immunity in exchange for her cooperation."
Michael lunged across the table toward me, but security guards restrained him before he could reach me.
"You're finished, Michael," I said quietly. "The police are waiting outside."
As security escorted him from the room, Michael's threats echoed down the corridor. The board members sat in stunned silence until the chairman finally spoke.
"Mrs. Davis—or Ms. Williams—I don't know what to say. We had no idea..."
"I understand," I replied. "Michael was very convincing. But now you have a choice to make about the future of Williams Corporation."
For the next hour, Jack and I presented our vision for the company—returning it to my father's principles, unwinding Michael's damaging policies, and establishing new leadership.
When we finished, the chairman looked around the table. "I believe we need to vote on new interim leadership."
One by one, the board members voiced their support for appointing me as interim CEO, with Jack's company providing operational support. By unanimous decision, control of Williams Corporation returned to the Williams family.
As we left the boardroom, reporters were already gathering in the lobby. Jack guided me toward a side exit.
"Are you ready for what comes next?" he asked. "Once we go public, there's no going back to anonymity."
I took a deep breath, thinking of all the paths that had led to this moment—Rachel's pain, Zoe's strength, and whoever I was now becoming.
"I'm ready," I said. "But first, there's something I need to do."
That afternoon, I visited my father in his care facility—where he'd been since his stroke triggered by Michael's betrayal. The nurses warned me that he might not recognize me.
I sat beside his bed, taking his hand in mine. "Dad, it's me. It's Rachel."
His eyes, cloudy with medication, slowly focused on my face. For a long moment, he simply stared. Then, recognition dawned.
"Rachel?" he whispered, his voice rusty. "They said... you were gone."
Tears filled my eyes. "I came back, Dad. And I've fixed everything. Williams Corporation is safe now."
A ghost of his old smile crossed his face. "My girl," he murmured. "Always knew... you were stronger than him."
I stayed with him until he drifted back to sleep, his face more peaceful than I'd seen in years. When I left the room, Jack was waiting in the hallway.
"How is he?" he asked gently.
"He recognized me," I said, wiping away tears. "That's more than I dared hope for."
Jack pulled me into his arms, and I allowed myself to lean into his strength. Tomorrow would bring press conferences and legal proceedings. But tonight, I would simply be a daughter who had found her way home.
