Chapter 28

As sunset approaches, nervous excitement builds in my chest.

Thea walks with me to the great room, squeezing my hand reassuringly before slipping inside to join the others. I wait outside the closed doors as tradition dictates, gathering my courage.

When the doors open, my breath catches. The room glows with candles and autumn flowers, the pack forming a circle to where Kieran waits at the center.

He's dressed in black with a silver pendant matching mine. When our eyes meet, everything fades—just him, waiting with warmth in his eyes.

I walk slowly toward him, aware of the pack watching but focused only on Kieran. When I reach him, he takes my hands in his, his touch grounding me.

"Ready?" he asks softly.

I nod, unable to find words.

Kieran turns to address the pack, his voice strong and clear. "Tonight we gather to welcome Selene Winters into our pack. She comes to us freely, choosing to bind her fate with ours."

A murmur of approval ripples through the gathered wolves.

"Selene," Kieran continues, turning back to me. "Do you come with open heart and honest intention?"

"I do," I respond, the traditional words coming easily.

"Do you pledge to honor the pack, to protect its members, to uphold its laws?"

"I do."

"And do you choose, of your own free will, to join your life with ours, to share in our joys and sorrows, our strengths and weaknesses?"

"I do." My voice is stronger now, conviction filling the words.

Kieran nods, satisfaction in his eyes. "Then speak your pledge."

I take a deep breath. "I, Selene Winters, pledge my loyalty, strength, and life to the Ravenhollow pack. I choose this family, this territory, and this alpha as my own. By moon and blood, I make this vow.”

"The pack hears your pledge," Kieran responds. "And I, as alpha, accept it."

He produces a small silver knife, its handle intricately carved with wolves. "Blood binds us," he says, making a small cut on his palm. He offers me the knife, and I do the same, wincing slightly at the sting.

Kieran takes my injured hand in his, pressing our cuts together. "By blood shared freely, by choice made willingly, by the witness of pack and moon, I welcome you, Selene Winters, to the Ravenhollow pack."

As our blood mingles, warmth spreads through me. The pack bond forms, connecting me to every wolf present—supportive and nurturing, unlike Marcus's invasive chain of control.

Most strongly, I feel Kieran—his strength, his certainty, his... joy. The emotion flows from him through our joined hands, pure and unguarded.

"It is done," he says, his voice slightly rough with emotion. "Welcome home, Selene."

The pack erupts in cheers and howls of approval. Kieran releases my hand, but the connection remains—a warm presence in the back of my mind, comforting rather than intrusive.

Thea is the first to approach, embracing me tightly. "Welcome to the family," she whispers. "Officially."

Pack members welcome me with hugs, handshakes, and traditional greetings. Their genuine acceptance brings tears to my eyes.

Kieran stays close, his hand at my back, pride in his expression. The ceremony shifts to celebration—food, drinks, and music filling the room as I'm drawn into conversations with my new packmates.

Eventually, Kieran rescues me, leading me to a quiet corner with fresh drinks. "How are you feeling?" he asks, his eyes searching mine.

"Overwhelmed," I admit. "But in a good way. The bond—it's nothing like what I expected."

"Different from Marcus's?"

"Completely." I try to find words to describe it. "This feels... supportive. Like a safety net, not a cage."

Relief crosses his face. "Good. That's how it should be."

"I feel all of you," I marvel. "Not thoughts exactly, but... presence. Especially you."

His smile warms. "The alpha bond is always strongest. It helps me protect the pack."

"And the others? Can they feel me too?"

"To varying degrees.” He takes my hand, his fingers warm against mine. "They'll respect your privacy, Selene. No one will intrude on your thoughts or feelings without permission.”

The reassurance eases a worry I hadn't fully acknowledged. After years of Marcus violating my mental privacy, the idea of being connected to an entire pack had been slightly terrifying.

"Thank you," I say, touching the pendant at my neck. "For this. For everything."

Kieran's eyes soften as they follow the movement. "It was my mother's. I've been saving it for..." He pauses, seeming to reconsider his words. "For the right moment."

The unspoken implication makes my heart race. Before I can respond, Nora approaches with an apologetic expression.

"Sorry to interrupt," she says. "But the elders are asking for a traditional first dance."

Kieran nods, turning to me with a smile. "Shall we?"

"Dance?" I blink in surprise. "I don't know the steps."

"Just follow my lead," he says, offering his hand. "I won't let you fall."

The promise carries meaning beyond the dance. I take his hand, following him to the cleared center of the room.
