I didn't scream, but he fell to the ground howling in agony.
He thought it was an accident, clutching his own scalded, red, and convulsing hand, looking at me with hatred so intense it was almost tangible.
"Hold her down," he ordered.
Two bodyguards roughly pinned me to the sofa.
I just looked at him and smiled, a smile that made his skin crawl.
He shook his hand, struggling to maintain his composure, and dialed Jenny Isaacs' number, his voice instantly turning sickeningly sweet.
"Jenny, darling, are you asleep? That little gift I sent you, does Snowball still like it?"
On the other end of the phone, Jenny Isaacs' voice was sweet and coquettish, carrying both innocence and cruelty.
"Eddie, Snowball absolutely loves it! She's been chewing on it all day. It's the perfect teething toy, just the right hardness."
Teething toy.
Those two words were like a rusty saw, repeatedly tearing at my heart.
That was the only keepsake of my dead child.
That small peach wood pendant that I had begged the old master at the temple to personally carve with the characters for "peace and safety."
"Edward Lawrence." I spoke, my voice frighteningly dry, "What did you give to her dog?"
He finally deigned to let his gaze fall on my face, with the look one gives to something scraped off the bottom of a shoe.
"Oh, that wooden pendant," he said dismissively. "It was cluttering up the drawer, so I had Ms. Green sanitize it and give it to Jenny. Recycling trash, isn't it?"
"Child?" He sneered, explaining softly into the phone, "Jenny, don't worry, it's just Daisy being crazy again. It was merely an unformed piece of flesh, how could that be called my child?"
Jenny Isaacs giggled on the phone: "Oh, poor Daisy, don't be upset. The puppy doesn't know any better. It doesn't realize that belonged to a dead fetus."
A dead child.
I violently broke free from the bodyguard and lunged at him like a wild beast.
"Edward Lawrence! Give me back my safety pendant!"
The bodyguard pinned me down again firmly, his knee pressing heavily into my back. I coughed up blood from the pain.
Almost simultaneously, Edward let out a muffled groan, clutched his chest, and his face instantly turned deathly pale.
But he ignored it and coldly ordered: "Lock her in the storage room on the top floor. No one lets her out without my permission."
As I was being dragged away, I used all my strength to ask him.
"Edward Lawrence, you killed him, and now you're even feeding his last memento to a dog... What exactly is your heart made of?"
He stopped in his tracks, turned his face sideways, with a cruel smile on his lips, but said nothing.
The door slammed shut behind me.
That day, I went insane.
It was also on that day that I heard the heavenly voice in my mind.
[Ding! Pain-sharing system has been bound.]
At that moment, on the restaurant floor.
Under the double torture of excruciating pain and fear, Edward Lawrence finally connected all the bizarre "accidents" of these past few days.
Boiling water, mangled finger, the injury on his arm...
Each time, they happened after he tried to hurt me, or tried to please Jenny Isaacs!
Every pain originated from me!
This realization made his blood freeze.
Terror.
Bone-deep terror!
He finally understood that he could no longer torture me at will, because all consequences would be returned to him a hundredfold.
He struggled to get up from the floor, ignoring the horrified gazes around him, ignoring Jenny's cries, and rushed out of the restaurant like a madman.
He had only one thought.
He needed to go back!
He needed to go back to see that woman!
He wanted to ask that woman face to face what was really going on!
He needed to know what kind of monster this woman, whom he had treated like dirt beneath his feet, had become... a monster he could no longer control!
