Chapter 234

Della’s POV

Though Sapphire didn’t have a huge reaction, I could vividly see the changes in her expression. She froze a bit, and her eyes widened as she looked intently at me.

That expression, though, immediately changed to confusion. With furrowed brows, she tilted her head a bit as if thinking deeply and said, “But according to my understanding… Wakeland prohibits the members of the Dark Moon Pack from entering this territory.”

Looking at me intently, she asked, “Who told you that he sneaked in, Princess? Is there any concrete evidence or clue to that which I can use to verify?”

I bit the inside of my cheek and took a deep breath as I composed myself. Looking up straight to her eyes, I replied with certainty, “I saw him. I saw him last night with my own eyes.”

“I couldn’t go wrong with that,” I said with a lower voice this time, more like to tell myself than to tell Sapphire.

I could feel her gaze lingering on me for a while, seemingly sorting her thoughts out that couldn’t possibly be more tangled than my current thoughts.

She blinked a couple of times before staring at me and tilting her head a bit, feeling her own suspicion. “Is it possible that this is related to Mr. K?”

Nodding my head, I tapped my fingers on the table. “That’s what I had in mind as well.”

My guts had been shouting about that the entire night, but I had no evidence to back it up, and until then, we couldn’t really do anything about it, nor could we assume further.

All I could have now was the possibility that Kylian possibly mixed with Mr. K’s entourage and entered the Wakeland. Whether Mr. K was knowledgeable about this or not, we couldn’t be certain.

Sapphire nodded in understanding and stood upright with an expression of determination all over her face. “Don’t worry, Princess. I’ll keep a close eye on this matter. Apart from that, do you have further instructions for me?”

Pushing myself away from the table so my swivel chair would push back, I stood up and walked toward the window to see the gigantic gate in front.

“I’ll be meeting a lot of people tonight,” I started before looking back at Sapphire. “Krendell’s family had been spreading a wildfire of lies about me everywhere in this land.”

I shook my head, feeling the headache that asshole had brought in me. “Whether we like to admit it or not, this caused quite a dent in my reputation. Some families and relevant businesses in here had already formed a prejudiced toward me.”

“I’m trying my best to lessen further false information from leaking, Princess. Aside from those who already heard and seen false information, I guarantee you that the spread won’t be as wide as when we weren’t here,” Sapphire informed.

Glancing at her, I nodded my head in praise. Without a need for instruction, she had the autonomy to do the essential work already. She’s making me admire her more and more.

“And that’s why at the event tonight, I greatly hope to make a good impression on everyone.” I walked around the table and stood right in front of her. With a serious expression on my face, I firmly said, “Hence, I also hope you can come and accompany me there as my beta.”

Her face remained stoic, and the room was engulfed with silence for a couple of seconds.

I looked at her with confusion and asked, “Is there a problem?”

Was it that… she didn’t want to come with me?

Instantly, panic momentarily surfaced in her face. Her lips moved a little, and she blinked a couple of times to remove that void in her eyes as her face became less tense.

“No, Princess, there’s no problem. I just…” she paused, seemingly finding the right words.

“Just?” I encouraged her, waiting for her to continue.

I saw her swallow the momentary nervousness I saw in her. “I just felt like I was dreaming.”

Furrowing my brows, I leaned on my desk and asked, “Dreaming, why?”

She shook her head a bit and then a bitter smile formed on her lips. She looked down a bit and narrated, “As a teen, I’ve been locked up for some mistakes. After I came out of that cage with iron bars, my youth was almost wiped out. No matter how hard I work or how good my grades were…”

She took a deep breath.

It’s the first time I've seen her like that, with emotions radiating all over her other than the determination to flawlessly work for me.

I could see the sadness and bitterness flashing in her eyes and the pain flowing in her every word.

Sighing, she shook her head helplessly before continuing, “Despite all that, everyone would tell me that I’m useless because I’ve been locked up and had a dark history, telling me that there’s no way the kingdom’s security will hire me.”

Standing straight, she looked at me with glistening eyes. “But I didn’t give up. I didn’t listen to them and tried to move forward. They laughed at me and called my efforts stupid, but I turned a deft ear even at times when I had self-doubts.”

She smiled at me and looked at me with gratitude. “But three months ago, I received an offer to be your beta. That offer saved me, and I’ll always be grateful to you, Princess. So much that I don’t know what to do.”

Taking a step closer to her, I tapped her shoulder before my hands slid down and held her hand tightly. I shook my head and firmly told her, “You don’t have to thank me or anyone else.”

“It wasn’t me who saved you,” I said, letting go before pointing at her. “It’s you. You save yourself with your own ability and not giving up.”

Smiling, I continued, “Sapphire, you need to cheer up. No one should live in the past. I want you to be my beta, like a warrior that you are.”

Her gloomy eyes started glinting brighter. With her arms on her side and hands on fist, she stood straight and looked at me with great determination. “Princess, I vow to this day that I’ll be forever loyal to you until my last breath.

After saying that, she gave me a deep bow of respect.

When she rose, we smiled at each other, knowing we’d be fighting a lot of battles side by side for a long time.

Nodding, I pointed toward the door and said, “Diana helped in preparing your dress for tonight. Go, try it on, and prepare for the evening party.”

After thanking me, she turned and left. As soon as she closed the door, I took a long breath and told myself, “It’s not just Sapphire, Della. Those words are for yourself, too.”

Walking toward a mirror, I told myself out loud, “Della, you shouldn’t live in the past anymore. Kylian is nothing but a shard of your past. You should never allow him to appear in your future again, even if you couldn’t forget him.”
