Chapter 40: Preparations

She looked away. "I need to go before they get suspicious."

"Sophia," I called softly as she reached the door. "Think about what side of history you want to be on."

After she left, I felt a renewed sense of hope. Maya had received my message. Liam knew where I was. They were coming.

But would they arrive in time? And could they possibly overcome the elaborate trap Richard had set?

I had to be ready. Whatever happened next, I needed to do my part to ensure we all made it out alive.

The next morning, I was escorted to the laboratory to begin my work. True to his word, Richard had provided all my research notes and fresh moss samples. I worked methodically, appearing to cooperate while secretly developing two formulas—one that would appear to be what Richard wanted, and another that might actually help us escape.

In the afternoon, I was allowed to visit Jackson in the medical wing. He was conscious but weak, silver restraints keeping him secured to the hospital bed.

"Charlie," he said when he saw me, his voice hoarse. "Are you okay? Did they hurt you?"

"I'm fine," I assured him, touched by his concern despite his own condition. "How are you feeling?"

"Like I got hit by a truck," he admitted with a weak smile. "But I'll heal. Werewolf, remember?"

I checked his vital signs while the guard watched from the doorway. "The silver is slowing your healing," I said quietly. "Try to conserve your strength."

"Liam's coming," Jackson whispered, so softly I barely heard him. "The whole pack. Be ready."

I gave a slight nod to show I understood. "Your pulse is still elevated," I said in a normal voice. "I'll need to adjust the counteragent formula."
