Chapter 15: Family Conflict

"You can't just leave like this!" Jay's voice sounded particularly sharp in the morning air.

I stood on the porch, my backpack already packed, the moonlight pendant gleaming on my chest. A week had passed since the confrontation with Victor at the art festival, and I had made a difficult decision.

"I have to, Jay," I said calmly, though my heart ached. "Victor's warning wasn't baseless. If I stay, I'll bring danger to the entire family."

Jay shook his head, his eyes full of pain. "We can face it together, Ella. The whole family will protect you."

"That's exactly what I'm worried about," I said softly. "I can't let you risk yourselves for me. Especially when I'm just beginning to understand my abilities."

Lina had agreed to let me stay temporarily at her house, until I learned to better control my abilities, or found more information about the Moonshadow clan.

"At least wait until after the family meeting to decide," Jay pleaded. "Father says he has important information to share."

I hesitated. I didn't want to hurt Jay, but leaving seemed the only way to protect everyone.

"Alright," I finally agreed. "I'll decide after the meeting."

The family meeting was held in William's study. Everyone was present: William sat behind his desk, Luke stood by the window, Noah and Aiden sat on the sofa, Jay and I stood side by side, the atmosphere tense.

"I've received information," William began directly, "that the 'Moonshadow Hunters' organization has confirmed Ella's identity and sent people here."

I felt a chill. "Moonshadow Hunters?"

"The extremist organization that killed your parents," Luke explained. "They believe werewolf bloodlines should remain 'pure,' opposing intermarriage with humans."

"Is Victor one of them?" I asked.

William shook his head. "Not entirely. The Stone family has connections with the hunters, but Victor seems to have his own ideas. He wants you, but doesn't necessarily want to harm you. The hunters are different—they will eliminate the Moonshadow bloodline at any cost."

I clenched my fists. "So I was right, I should leave, not implicate you all."

"No!" Jay immediately objected. "That's exactly what they want, to isolate you, make you vulnerable."

"Jay is right," Luke surprisingly agreed. "Separating will only make us all weaker."

Noah spoke gently. "Ella, you're our family. How could we let you face danger alone?"

"Besides," Aiden added, "your moonlight abilities are awakening. Rather than running away, why not learn to control them, use them to protect yourself and your family?"

I looked at these caring faces, my heart full of conflict. I didn't want to leave, but I also didn't want to be a burden or source of danger to them.

"There's one more thing," William said, taking an old letter from a drawer. "This is from your mother. I've been waiting for the right time to give it to you."

I took the envelope with trembling fingers. The paper had yellowed, but the handwriting remained clear:

"Dear Ella,

When you read this letter, I may no longer be by your side. But please remember, your father and I will always love you.

The Moonshadow bloodline flows within you, both a gift and a responsibility. Moonlight will guide you, but true power comes from love and courage.

Don't fear your nature, nor let fear dictate your choices. Find those worthy of trust, and stand with them.

Remember, the Moonshadow clan's strongest ability isn't controlling moonlight, but the ability to transform darkness into light.

Forever loving you,

Mom"

Tears blurred my vision. I looked up at the moon outside the window, then at the family in the room, and finally at Jay's concerned eyes.

"I won't run away," I finally said, my voice firm. "I'll stay, learn to control my abilities, and face challenges with my family."

Jay sighed in relief, joy flashing in his eyes. Luke nodded in approval, Noah smiled, Aiden cheered. William's expression was more complex—relief mixed with worry.

"Since you've decided to stay," Luke said, "we need to make plans. First, Ella needs intensified training. Second, we need more intelligence about the hunters."

"I can teach Ella to control her moonlight abilities," Jay suggested. "We can practice on full moon nights, when her power is strongest."

"I'll research defense systems," Aiden said excitedly. "Install more sensors and alarms for the house."

"I'll prepare medical supplies," Noah added. "Just in case."

William watched this scene, pride flashing in his eyes. "The Moon family and Moonshadow clan united again. This is destiny's arrangement."

After the meeting, Jay and I went to the balcony, gazing at the moon in the night sky.

"I'm sorry," I said softly. "I almost left."

Jay held my hand. "I understand your fear. But please remember, Ella, true love doesn't retreat because of difficulties."

"I just didn't want to be a burden to you all."

"You were never a burden," Jay turned to me, his eyes full of determination. "You're the hope of our family, the light in my life. If necessary, I would fight to protect you."

I took a deep breath, feeling the warmth of the moonlight pendant. "I'll learn to protect myself, and this home."

Just then, Aiden rushed onto the balcony, his face panicked. "Victor posted photos on the school forum! Not werewolf photos, but of you and Jay! He claims Jay used the teacher-student relationship to seduce you!"

Jay and I quickly checked our phones, seeing the forum had exploded. The photos showed us intimately talking in the studio, with text implying an inappropriate relationship.

"This is absurd!" I said angrily. "There's nothing inappropriate between us!"

"But this will affect Jay's career," Aiden said worriedly. "The school is already investigating."

Jay's expression became serious. "Victor is clever. He knows directly threatening the werewolf identity is too risky, so he chose this way to attack us."

I felt a wave of guilt. "This is all because of me. If I hadn't come to this family..."

"No," Jay firmly interrupted. "This isn't your fault. Victor is retaliating because you chose your own path, chose me."

Luke and Noah joined us, already aware of the situation.

"The school board will hold a hearing tomorrow," Luke said. "As a teacher, I've been notified."

"What should we do?" I asked, feeling things were spiraling out of control.

Luke thought for a moment. "We need to prove your relationship developed after you came of age, without any teacher-student power imbalance."

"But more importantly," Noah added, "we need to expose Victor's motives and methods."

I suddenly thought of something. "Olivia!"

"Who?" Jay asked in confusion.

"My former best friend, Victor's ex-girlfriend," I explained. "She knows Victor's true nature, might be willing to speak up."

Aiden immediately took action. "I'll contact her!"

Night fell, family members each preparing for tomorrow's response, leaving only Jay and me on the balcony.

"Whatever happens tomorrow," Jay said softly, "I don't regret anything. Falling in love with you is the best decision I've ever made."

I leaned on his shoulder. "We'll face it together. As my mother said, true power comes from love and courage."

Moonlight poured over us, like a blessing, also like a warning. I knew tomorrow would be a tough battle, but with family by my side, with Jay by my side, I was no longer afraid to face any challenge.

Because now, I finally understood the true meaning of the moonlight covenant—no matter how long the darkness, light will eventually come, just as the moon never gives up illuminating the night sky.
