Chapter 2: Prelude

"Mr. Davis, Miss Williams has called again." Three years earlier, Mia Brown leaned against the doorway of Michael's office, her voice dripping with contempt.

"Tell her I'm in a meeting." Michael didn't even look up as he continued signing documents.

"That's the third 'meeting' today." Mia sauntered over, kneading his shoulders. "God, doesn't she get the hint?"

Michael put down his pen and caught Mia's hand. "She's just a means to an end. I've already secured most of the Williams family's assets. Just need to play the game a little longer."

"Patience?" Mia sneered. "That's not what you said last night." She leaned down and whispered in his ear, "I'm sick of being your dirty little secret."

Michael swiveled his chair toward her. "You know the Williams family's position in the business world. I need her father's support to cement my control of the Davis Group."

"What about me?" Mia's eyes flashed dangerously. "After everything I've done for you? The dirt on your competitors, the recordings from board meetings..."

"Relax," Michael pulled her onto his lap. "Once I secure my position as the undisputed head of Davis Group, Rachel Williams becomes expendable."

"You swear?"

"I swear." Michael kissed her lips. "When that time comes, you'll be the only Mrs. Davis that matters."

Outside the office door, Rachel stood frozen, the surprise birthday gift slipping from her fingers and crashing to the floor with a dull thud.
