Chapter 5

The poker room at the Venetian Hotel is one of the most luxurious gaming venues in Las Vegas. With Italian Renaissance-style decor and exquisite murals painted on the ceiling, it makes visitors feel as if they were in actual Venice.

Jack sat at a $10-20 Texas Hold'em poker table, the highest level he could afford right now. His target was Danny Morano, the mysterious investor Vincent suspected.

According to information provided by Vincent, Danny Morano was an Italian-American man in his fifties who wore expensive suits, gold watches, and carried himself with elegance despite his piercing gaze. He usually appeared after 8 PM and preferred playing high-stakes poker games.

Jack had been observing for two evenings already but hadn't spotted Danny Morano yet. He was beginning to wonder if this person really existed or if he had already left Las Vegas.

On the third night, Jack was deep in thought over his hand of cards when he suddenly heard a voice.

"Is anyone sitting here?"

Jack looked up and saw a middle-aged man standing next to him. It was Danny Morano.

"No, please sit down," Jack said, trying to remain calm.

Danny Morano sat down and took out a stack of cash from his pocket. "Buy in for five thousand dollars," he said to the dealer.

Jack observed the man carefully. His suit was indeed expensive, looking like Italian custom-made. His watch was a Rolex, but not an overly flashy model. His manners were refined, but Jack noticed that his eyes were constantly scanning the surrounding environment.

"New face?" Danny asked Jack.

"Yes, I'm Jack," Jack replied.

"Danny Morano," he extended his hand, "Where are you from?"

"Chicago." Jack shook his hand, noticing that it was firm with obvious calluses. This didn't seem like the hand of a pure businessman or investor.

"Chicago is a good place. I have some business there," Danny said.

The game began. Jack found that Danny Morano was an excellent poker player. His technique was superb, his ability to read people was strong, and he was very good at controlling his emotions.

Two hours later, Jack had lost about a thousand dollars, while Danny Morano had won about three thousand dollars.

"You play well," Danny said to Jack, "but you seem a bit tense."

"I'm still learning," Jack said.

"We're all learning," Danny said with a smile, "but some people learn faster."

The game continued. Jack noticed that whenever Danny Morano received a phone call, he would speak in Italian. Jack didn't understand Italian, but he could sense the tension in these conversations.

At eleven o'clock at night, Danny Morano prepared to leave.

"Nice to meet you, Jack," he said. "Hope to see you again."

"Me too," Jack replied.

After Danny Morano left, Jack continued playing for a while, then left the poker room as well. But instead of returning to the motel, he quietly followed Danny Morano.

He saw Danny Morano walk toward the hotel elevator and press the button for the top floor. Jack knew that's where the presidential suite was located.

The next day, Jack called Alison.

"I found Danny Morano," he said.

"Good. What did you discover?"

"He is indeed a very mysterious person. His hands have calluses, unlike those of a pure businessman. He often answers phone calls in Italian, and seems very nervous," Jack said. "I need more time to understand him."

"Be careful. Remember, you're now working for two sides."

"I know."

That evening, Jack came to the poker room at the Venetian again. Danny Morano was already there, sitting at a $25-50 table.

"Jack!" Danny called out, "Come have a seat."

Jack hesitated for a moment. The $25-50 game was a bit too high for him, but this might be his only chance to get close to Danny Morano.

"I'm not sure if my bankroll is sufficient," Jack said.

"Don't worry," Danny said, "I can lend you some."

"That... doesn't seem appropriate."

"It's normal for friends to help each other out," Danny insisted, "I trust you'll pay me back."

Jack finally accepted Danny Morano's loan and sat down at the high-stakes table.

The players here were clearly more skilled, and each decision involved thousands of dollars. Jack felt pressure like never before.

An hour later, Jack had lost about five thousand dollars, including the money Danny Morano had lent him.

"Looks like you're not having much luck tonight," Danny said.

"Yes, I think I should stop," Jack said.

"Don't give up so quickly," Danny said, "Sometimes, the greatest victories come from the most difficult moments."

"I don't have any more money."

"I told you, friends help each other," Danny said, "I can lend you some more."

Jack realized that Danny Morano might be deliberately letting him fall into debt. This could be a trap.

"Thanks, but I think I'm done for tonight," Jack said.

"As you wish," Danny said, "But remember, you owe me five thousand dollars."

"I know. I'll pay you back."

"I trust that you will," Danny's smile became somewhat cold, "But if you can't pay on time, I might need to take some... measures."

Jack felt a chill. He realized he might have gotten himself into a dangerous situation.

Leaving the Venetian Hotel, Jack immediately called Alison.

"I've got into trouble." he said.

"What trouble?"

"Danny Morano has put me in debt. I owe him five thousand dollars."

"This could be a trap." Alison said, "He might be trying to control you."

"What should I do?"

"Meet with my FBI contact tomorrow. We need to make a plan."

The next afternoon, Jack arrived at an inconspicuous coffee shop. Alison was already waiting for him there, sitting next to a serious-looking middle-aged man.

"Jack, this is Special Agent Robert Harris." Alison introduced.

"Nice to meet you, Jack." Harris said, "Alison tells me you're willing to cooperate."

"Yes, but I need some assurances." Jack said.

"I can offer you witness protection, but you need to provide valuable information." Harris said, "Regarding Danny Morano, we've been watching him for a long time."

"Who exactly is he?"

"He is an important member of an international money laundering organization. They use legitimate investment activities to launder illegal funds." Harris said, "We suspect he came to Las Vegas to establish a new money laundering network."

"What about Vincent Rossi?"

"Vincent Rossi is also within the scope of our investigation. But he's a small fish, Danny Morano is the big fish."

Jack pondered. "What do you need me to do?"

"Continue to get close to Danny Morano, learn about his plans." Harris said, "If possible, obtain evidence of his criminal activities."

"This is dangerous."

"Yes, but this is also an opportunity to end it all." Harris said, "If you help us catch Danny Morano, you not only get immunity, but also a hefty bonus."

"How much?"

"One hundred thousand dollars."

Jack's heart raced. A hundred thousand dollars was a huge sum, enough for him to start over.

"I accept," he said.

"Very well. But remember, this mission is extremely dangerous. If you're discovered, we may not be able to rescue you in time."

Jack nodded. He knew he was about to step into an even more dangerous territory.

That evening, Jack's phone rang. It was Danny Morano calling.

"Jack, I have a proposition," Danny said.

"What proposition?"

"I need someone to help me handle some matters. If you're willing, I can clear your debt and give you some additional compensation."

Jack realized this might be an opportunity.

"What kind of matters?"

"We'll discuss the details when we meet tomorrow night. The Venetian Hotel, Presidential Suite."

"Alright."

After hanging up, Jack immediately contacted Harris.

"This is an excellent opportunity," Harris said. "But you'll need to wear a listening device."

"What if I'm discovered?"

"That's the risk. But if you succeed, we'll obtain crucial evidence."

The next evening, Jack came to the presidential suite at the Venetian Hotel with hidden listening devices. Danny Morano was already there waiting for him, but he wasn't alone. There were two other people in the room who looked like bodyguards.

"Jack, welcome," Danny said, "Please sit."

Jack sat down and looked around. The suite was extremely luxurious, but he noticed that all the curtains were drawn, and there was a tense atmosphere in the room.

"I need you to do something for me," Danny began, "There's a person who poses a threat to my business. I need someone to... persuade him."

"What do you mean?" Jack asked.

"I mean, make him understand that continuing to interfere with my business is unwise," Danny's voice turned cold, "Sometimes, this requires some... physical persuasion."

Jack realized that Danny Morano was asking him to hurt or even kill someone.

"I... I'm not that kind of person," Jack said.

"Everyone can become that kind of person, as long as the motivation is sufficient." Danny said, "You owe me five thousand dollars, this is an opportunity to clear your debt."

"What if I refuse?"

"Then that's your choice. But remember, in this city, debts need to be repaid." A hint of threat flashed in Danny's eyes, "Sometimes, the interest can be very high."

Jack felt fear like never before. He realized that he had been drawn into a game far more dangerous than he had imagined.

"I need time to think about it," he said.

"Of course. But don't think too long." Danny said, "Give me your answer tomorrow night."

Jack left the suite with mixed feelings. He knew he was now in an extremely dangerous position. If he accepted Danny Morano's demands, he would become a criminal; if he refused, he might face mortal danger.

But he also knew that this might be the only opportunity to obtain crucial evidence.
