Chapter 12

Two police officers were just finishing taking statements, apparently writing it off as a drunken dispute not worth investigating further.
For now, only Gregory and I remained in the room.
Sophia was probably rattled by my "returning things" comment and had gone to make arrangements.
When Gregory saw me, his eyes lit up. He struggled to sit straighter, reaching for me. "Baby, I knew you'd come..." he croaked tearfully. "I regret everything. I was so wrong..."
I stood still, not moving closer, watching him with a complex expression.
"What's the point of all this now?" I sighed, my voice tired and slightly choked. "Focus on recovering. Sophia's very worried about you."
I deliberately mentioned Sophia. As expected, disgust and irritation flashed across Gregory's face.
"Don't mention her!" he snapped, then winced as the movement pulled at his wound. "Being with her was a mistake! I regret it every day..."
I approached his bedside but kept my hands away from his. I handed him a water glass from the nightstand. "Drink. Don't talk nonsense—aren't you two meeting the parents soon?"
"She forced me into that!" Gregory seized the opportunity to vent. "Give me one more chance. I'll cut her off completely! Let's start over, okay?"
I lowered my eyes, lashes hiding my contempt. Start over? With garbage like him?
But I softened my voice, injecting helpless sadness: "Gregory, Sophia is still my sister, and she loves you very much."
"Sister? She's a lunatic!" Gregory took the bait, his hatred for Sophia intensifying. "Baby, just say the word and I'm yours! I only want you!"
Looking at his pathetic eagerness to prove his loyalty, I knew the timing was perfect.
"You should rest. I need to go—I have matters to attend to. Gregory, I hope you and my sister will be happy together."
Even though I've taken back what's mine.
The game has only just begun.
You two better keep "loving" each other.
Don't disappoint me.
