Chapter 8

907words
Marcus takes Leo to my apartment while I stay with Alexander. The USB drive burns a hole in my pocket. Part of me doesn't want to know its contents.

When the nurse steps out, I plug the drive into my laptop. Folders appear, meticulously organized by date. I click on the earliest one, from five years ago.

Audio files, documents, and photos fill the screen. I open the first document – Alexander's personal journal. My hands tremble as I begin to read.

"William threatened to harm Elise today. Said if I don't marry Victoria, he'll make sure Elise 'has an accident.' I have to protect her. I have to make her leave."

My breath catches. I open another file, dated the day after I left.

"She's gone. Took nothing but clothes. Left her ring and... an ultrasound picture. My God, she was pregnant. I've lost everything that matters."

File after file documents Alexander's secret search for me. Private investigators' reports. Travel records. Dead ends and false leads.

Then I find the audio recordings. Alexander's voice fills my headphones:

"The marriage to Victoria is a sham. Separate bedrooms from day one. She knows I'm only here to save the company from William's sabotage."

Another recording, dated two years later:

"Found evidence William has been embezzling for years. He engineered the financial crisis to force the Sullivan merger. Building my case slowly. Can't move too quickly."

Photos show surveillance of William meeting with known criminals. Financial records reveal the elaborate fraud he perpetrated against King Enterprises.

The most recent files detail Alexander's careful plan to regain control of his company. How he secretly bought back shares through shell companies. His divorce proceedings. His continued search for me.

Then I find a folder labeled "Leo." Inside are dozens of photos – surveillance images of me and Leo in Paris. Notes from private investigators confirming Leo's birth date.

The final document breaks my heart: "DNA test confirms Leo is Lane's son. The timing matches perfectly. I've lost them both forever."

Tears stream down my face as the truth emerges. Alexander never betrayed me – he was protecting me. He pushed me away to save my life. And all this time, he believed Leo was Marcus's child.

A weak voice interrupts my thoughts. "I never stopped looking for you."

I look up to find Alexander awake, watching me with pain-filled eyes. The monitors beep faster as he tries to sit up.

"Don't move." I rush to his side, gently pressing him back against the pillows. "You'll tear your stitches."

He captures my hand in his. "You're really here. I thought I dreamed it."

"I'm here." I wipe away my tears. "Leo's safe, thanks to you."

Relief washes over his face. "You risked your life for him."

"Of course I did." His voice is barely audible. "He's an innocent child."

I squeeze his hand, gathering my courage. "He's your child, Alexander."

His eyes widen in shock. "What?"

"Leo is your son." The truth feels liberating after five years of silence. "I was already pregnant when you sent me away."

Alexander's face crumples with emotion. "But the timing... Lane..."

"Marcus is my cousin." I stroke his face gently. "He's been Leo's uncle, never his father."

Alexander's eyes close briefly in pain – emotional or physical, I can't tell. "I thought... all this time..."

"I know what you thought." I hold up the USB drive. "I've seen your files."

His eyes open, filled with new understanding. "William threatened to kill you."

I nod slowly. "And you pushed me away to protect me."

"I had to make you hate me." His fingers tighten around mine. "It was the only way to keep you safe."

The realization of our mutual deception – his to protect me, mine to protect Leo – overwhelms me. Five years of pain built on misunderstandings and fear.

"Why didn't you tell me?" I ask, the question that's been burning inside me. "Why make me believe you chose money over us?"

Alexander winces as he shifts position. "William had people watching you. I couldn't risk it."

"And after?" I press. "When you found out I was pregnant?"

"I searched everywhere." His voice breaks. "By the time I traced you to Paris, you were with Lane. Always with Lane."

I understand now – the photos his investigators took, always showing Marcus with us. The perfect illusion of a family.

"He was protecting us." I explain softly. "The romantic rumors were our shield."

Alexander's eyes fill with tears. "I have a son. A son who doesn't know me."

I take his hand and place it over my heart. "But he can know you now."

The door opens as a nurse enters to check Alexander's vitals. She smiles at seeing him awake.

"Good to see those eyes open, Mr. King." She adjusts his IV. "Your body's been through a lot."

When she leaves, Alexander looks at me with new determination. "I know I have no right to ask this."

I wait, my heart pounding in my chest. Five years of pain and misunderstanding hang between us.

"Will you and Leo visit me while I recover?" His voice holds no demands, only hope.

It's a small request, a beginning rather than an ending. I think of Leo asking about the man who saved him.

"We'll visit." I squeeze his hand gently. "One day at a time."

Alexander's smile is worth every word. "One day at a time."
