I knew I was playing a dangerous game of cat and mouse with my mate, and if I didn't get my wolf out of there, I could guarantee that neither of us would have made it to the presentation of the pack's Gamma. I had met Beta Don in my office as I waited for Adeline. He had updated me on border patrol, last-minute banquet details, and the final guest list. To my surprise, Alpha Christian still hadn't shown up. It was as if he had disappeared into thin air, which only further pissed my wolf off. I couldn't seem to wrap my head around what was going on, but I planned to get to the bottom of it. He was my sister's damn mate, and if he thought he was going to play games with her heart, he had another thing coming.

Beta Don and I left my office and began to make our way toward Sophia's bedroom. A part of me felt guilty that my Beta was missing Sophia's presentation. The two of them had become good friends, and he was the pack Beta after all. But another part of me knew that it was in the best interest of the pack that he stayed behind. He was the strongest shifter in Midnight Moon after me, as Alpha. There was no doubt in my mind that he would do whatever was necessary to protect this pack. He was also one of the few people in this world that I trusted. All I knew was that today was not the day for accidents to happen, nor would I stand by if any of them did.

Beta Don and I stood in the middle of the hallway, strategizing the best methods to ensure the pack's safety over the next few hours. That's when I smelled it—a scent so fucking irresistible that it made my wolf go stir crazy inside. "A-Alpha?" Beta Don asked, his eyebrows knitting together in concern. I knew the scent, but I still couldn't seem to calm my wolf every time we sensed it. I whipped my head toward the end of the hall, and there she was.

Adeline. My mate. My Luna.

The red satin gown hugged her curves like it was painted onto her body. The low dip at the front plunged down, her perky breasts revealing just enough to drive any wolf insane. She was walking toward me, her long leg protruding with each step, and I was certain this little mate of mine wasn't wearing any panties under that ensemble. My mind drifted, and I found myself daydreaming about my lips caressing her soft skin, taking every inch of her over and over as she screamed out my name. My heart began to race inside my chest at the thought, and I was ripped back to reality as she brushed her fingers against my face, placing a small kiss on my cheek.

"Alpha," she said, giving me a small nod before turning to Beta Don and repeating the action.

"You look magnificent," Beta Don told Adeline as he reached for her hand, placing a small kiss on the back of her palm. I couldn't stop the growl from ripping through my chest. Before I realized what was happening, I had Beta Don pinned against the wall, my hand squeezing his throat a little tighter as I watched him struggle for air.

"JAXON!" my mate shouted, and like clockwork, my wolf obeyed. My hand loosened on Beta Don's throat, and by the time I realized what had happened, Beta Don was bent over, gasping for air. I placed a hand on his back. "Fuck, man, I'm sorry," I said.

He shook his head, still hunched over, and gasped, "I know it was Titus. It won't happen again, Alpha."

I scolded Titus inside for nearly killing our second in command, but Titus ignored me, bringing our attention back to our mate. Beta Don finally regained his composure as his gaze moved from Adeline to me. "I better go. Wish Sophia the best of luck for me," he said in a voice that I noticed nearly broke my mate's damn heart.

"Will do, Beta," Adeline said and shot Beta Don a wink that once again stirred Titus's fury inside. She placed a palm on my chest and smirked. "Down, boy," she muttered to Titus, who instantly retreated.

"Ready?" Adeline asked as she reached for the doorknob and shot me a small smile over her shoulder. I smirked and nodded as she pushed Sophia's bedroom door open.

There she stood in the middle of the room. My little sister. My pride and joy. Ready to be whisked away by some asshole Alpha I had spent my entire life considering my best friend. She was shining brighter than I'd ever seen, her happiness pouring out of her. She turned to look at me, and that's when I swore my heart lodged in my throat. Sophia's eyes started to pool with tears when she noticed me.

"J-Jaxon," she stuttered and rushed toward me. I wrapped my large arms around her, my nerves working in overdrive at the thought that this could be the last time I saw her if her mate didn't allow her to visit. And right now, with the games Christian was playing, anything was possible.

Sophia's choked sobs became muffled in my suit, and I continued to hold her close. It wasn't until she pulled away, wiping her makeup with her fingers and letting out a small laugh.

"I didn't mean to. My makeup's going to stain your suit," she said with a giggle.

The blissful laugh disappeared from her face as she cocked her head at me, then at Adeline. She scrunched her nose and knitted her eyebrows in confusion. "What's that smell? You smell... different."
