Chapter 151 A Home for Two

The game of tug and war that Alpha Jaxon and I had been playing had given me a headache. He had been trying to break through the wall I had put up to block the mind link, since I wasn't interested in listening to his lectures right now. Still, he kept pushing and probing, trying to get through, and the pressure was making me feel like my head was about to explode. My mind was scattered all over the place. I needed to run, to feel free, to get a release from it all after hearing Sophia's confession.
I didn't know what more I could do. I had gone through every possible scenario in my mind multiple times, and nothing made any sense. He might as well imprison her and lock her up in a cage if all he wanted to do was take her as some sort of side piece. As I let my four legs take me further into the forest, I allowed my mind to go blank. All I cared about was the wind blowing through my fur. The feeling of liberation as I moved my weight from one leg to another. The forest was eerily silent—I could hear the pattering of my feet against the forest floor like some kind of lullaby.
I felt my claws skid across the floor as I came to a screeching halt at my favorite place in the pack. The lake held a certain calmness about it. It felt like home. A different version of home, that was. I quickly shifted and moved to the boulder off to the side. I took a deep breath and closed my eyes as I still breathed. I could hear the water rippling in the background as my skin pressed against the coldness of the stone. I let my mind wander as I silently prayed to the Moon Goddess to keep our pack safe, to keep Sophia and Alpha Jaxon safe. Just like that, I felt like I heard a soft voice echo inside my mind. "Save the Alpha at all costs." I heard those six words repeating like they were a broken record. As they began to fade away, I heard rustling coming from behind me. I snapped my eyes open and stared into the forest line. There was nothing. Not a single leaf was out of place.
As I turned my gaze back to the lake, I found myself at a standstill as I glared at the house that Jaxon had been building for us. For our family. It was nearly completed now, or at least most of the exterior was. I placed a hand on my stomach. I wondered if there was something in there. I wondered if there was a small piece of him and a small piece of me inside. I scolded myself for not looking for the doctor before he left our pack. What kind of mother would I even make? I felt a flutter dance in my core. Was it nerves, I wondered? Or could it be something more?
I felt large, strong arms wrap around me. My skin instantly prickled with tiny shocks. But still, Jaxon's touch did little to calm me as the nervous energy continued to boil inside my veins. I leaned my head back and was met with Jaxon's broad shoulders. I let my body melt into his. Safety. That was when it hit me. Being with my mate, I always felt safe and secure. The Moon Goddess was expecting me to protect him. I wondered if he felt the same way around me. He squeezed his arms around me ever so lightly. The action grounded me and pulled me from my never-ending thoughts.
"Do you know what it feels like when you do that?" he asked softly into my ear. I turned my head slightly to face him and furrowed my brows together. "Do what?"
"When you block me out. It makes my wolf feel like you've shut us out. It feels like every second that passes makes me drown a little bit more. You're my everything, Adeline," he said as he pressed a gentle kiss on my forehead. I closed my eyes, not wanting this moment to end. "I know, I'm sorry. You can't order me around like I'm some warrior in your pack, though," I explained as my eyes fluttered open and I stared up into the golden orbs dancing in his eyes. They were filled with concern, and suddenly I felt a pang of guilt exploding in my chest.
"A lot has happened today," Jaxon admitted as he heaved a sigh. He looked defeated in every sense as the worry lines on his forehead banded together. "I figured. How bad?"
Jaxon pressed his lips into a tight line, and I could see the wheels turning inside his head. By the look on his face, I knew he was already coming up with some excuse not to worry me. His hand crept down to my stomach, and I swore I could feel another flutter there. He stared at me with such intensity that I couldn't break the stare between us.
"We don't have long... I have to present Sophia soon," he replied, blandly dodging my question. I nodded, but I continued to stare up into the honey rays in his eyes. A moment of silence passed between us. Finally, it was him who broke the silence. "What is it?" he probed.
My mouth went dry, and my stomach started to turn. I wasn't sure how to string the words together, but I knew I had to tell him. Sophia was hours away from becoming Alpha Christian's mistress.
