I could sense Beta Don's irritation hitting me in violent waves as he moved toward Adeline and me. He was nervous. Agitated. I knew Don well enough to tell he was barely holding it together. He approached Adeline, taking in a whiff of her scent, and suddenly, he gleamed—hopeful for a potential heir for the Midnight Moon Pack. My mate potentially carrying my heir had never crossed my mind; I was too caught up in my own nerves, worried that something was seriously wrong with Adeline. She consumed me with just one glance. I would go to the ends of the earth to ensure her happiness.

When her heart started pounding inside her chest, I was nearly certain the entire pack could hear her nerves on full display. I pulled her into me, feeling her small body tremble against my chest. "Shh, whatever it is, we'll get through it together, remember?" I whispered, and I felt her heart begin to slow, returning to its usual rhythm. A part of me worried—was Adeline ready for this? She had been so apprehensive under all the pressure from the pack. If she was indeed carrying the future Alpha of Midnight Moon, I wasn't sure how I'd hold off the pack. This was everything they had longed for. This was the security and stability that would ensure our pack thrived.

Once the pack doctor walked into the pack house, I couldn't help but grin when he stopped in his tracks. He sensed it too. Now that I thought about it, her scent had slightly changed. Our scents had mixed, creating a subtly different smell. I wasn't sure how I'd missed the change, aside from the chaos of the past few days, but I knew my heart was full.

I found myself silently praying to the Moon Goddess as we climbed the staircase to the second floor for the pack doctor to examine Adeline. Adeline squeezed my hand tightly and took a deep breath as we entered our bedroom, where she sat down on the mattress. I stood back, allowing Doctor Raymond to do his job. I trusted him as the best physician in the country, but I trusted no one alone with my mate and our potential pup.

"This will be quick," Doctor Raymond explained. "Let me guess—blurred vision, nausea, and an overall off feeling?"

Adeline's cheeks tinged pink as she bit her bottom lip and nodded. "Sounds hopeful, Luna. I'll collect a vial of blood, and we'll know shortly. Until then, I suggest you rest. I hear you've had a long journey."

Doctor Raymond scavenged through his black leather medical bag, pulling out a kit and assembling a needle. "I'll have to draw some blood, Alpha. Maybe you should wait outside?" he suggested nervously.

I growled back at him, "No." I muttered just one word, but I knew the coldness it held—it cut through like a shard of ice.

Doctor Raymond nodded. "Very well, Alpha. Luna Adeline, you'll feel a pinch, but it will be over quickly," he explained as he reached for her arm to find a vein.

My wolf was anxious and pacing inside me—a newfound possessiveness taking over as the pack doctor got too close to both his mate and potential pup. It was like he knew. I was forced to push down the instinct, though I hoped it was correct.

Adeline tried to keep herself composed as the pack doctor inserted the needle into her arm. She wore a strained look, as if her nerves were winning. I chalked it up to her effort to keep my wolf at bay. Once Doctor Raymond collected what he needed, he twisted the cap onto the vial. "Alpha, Luna, I have to run this to the lab. Let's say an hour or so?"

Adeline thanked him as he packed up his medical bag and bid us goodbye. I moved to sit beside Adeline on our mattress, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. "You alright, little wolf?" I asked with a laugh.

She nodded, and I swear my heart grew three sizes bigger when she smiled back at me. "Ready as I'll ever be," she said, her bright eyes melting into mine. I was hoping for this much-needed conversation, to make sure she knew I was standing beside her no matter what happened. But a knock ripped us from each other. When I saw Beta Don standing in the doorway, I fought the urge to rip his throat out. What could possibly be so damn urgent?

"Apologies for the interruption," he said, lowering his glare. I could hear his heart thumping inside his chest, and when I felt Adeline place her hand on my thigh, I knew she heard it too. "How can we help you, Beta Don?" Adeline asked cheerfully. I fought back a laugh, finding his discomfort amusing.

"Alpha... maybe we should speak in private. I wouldn't want to stress the Luna, given her possible condition," he explained.

Adeline scoffed and crossed her arms over her chest. "Given that the Luna is the pack mother, I believe it's vital for her to be included in this conversation," she shot back, her chest heaving angrily.

I heaved a sigh, running my hand through my hair. "Maybe he's right, little wolf. The pack doctor told you to relax and rest. It's best for our pup," I said. Our pup. I felt like the luckiest man in the world saying that and offered a silent prayer to the Moon Goddess. Please secure our pack, Goddess.
