Chapter 84 Mated to My Sister

"Jax... Sophia is my mate..." Alpha Christian's words burned into my mind as they rolled off his tongue. The room went silent, both of us struggling with the newfound revelation. Sophia's eighteenth birthday was fast approaching; my baby sister, whom I had always guarded with my life, would soon be figuring out that Alpha Christian was her fated mate. While Alpha Christian wouldn't be at the top of my list of potential candidates worthy enough to mate with my sister, I also wouldn't stand between them if she wanted to be with him. I had known him for what felt like a lifetime; he wasn't a bad guy by any means—just lost in his ways, similar to how I was before I met Adeline. I had even considered him one of my best friends before he tried to take my mate from me. Fate certainly had a strange sense of humor. Whether I liked it or not, our packs would soon be tied closer than I could have ever imagined.
An angry growl echoed in the room; my wolf was not taking the news well. I fought the urge to shift; my entire body was trembling. My eyes shot to Beta Don, who was sitting in the chair next to Alpha Christian, his ankle draped over his knee. "Did you know?" I yelled, ready to rip anyone's throat out who stood in my way. Beta Don pressed his lips together, thinking his words over for a moment. "No. He didn't tell me. But I figured it out when he wouldn't stop eye-fucking her from the other side of the aisle during the burial."
Suddenly, it all made sense—my Beta Don was being protective of Sophia. I should have clued in earlier; I realized he had seen her as a little sister since they were pups, after all. Beta Don's shoulders were tense; I could feel that he was uneasy about the situation too. His eyes kept bouncing between Alpha Christian and me, as if he was waiting for the command to end his life right there. His wolf was edging for blood.
I brushed the back of my knuckles against my face, the prickling of my five o'clock shadow temporarily distracting me. I watched Alpha Christian closely, trying to decipher his true intentions with Sophia. She was all I had. I remembered all the drunken nights and numerous girls we plowed through. Soon it would be my sister he was plowing through. "Christian, you've never even wanted a mate. What are your intentions with her?" I questioned, watching for any hint of bullshit in his expression.
"I'm not getting any younger, Jax. My pack has been hounding me for a Luna for quite some time. There's something about her that I never noticed before—I barely know her, yet I feel like I would move the world for her. All bullshit aside, you know I would never hurt your sister. I'd like to stay in Midnight Moon for a few more days to get to know her," he explained. I could sense he was bothered by the unexpected situation too.
I nodded. "One condition. On one condition only can you stay on pack territory: I don't want you telling her that she's your fated mate. Wait it out until she's of age, like I did with Adeline. Let it happen naturally. I don't want you blabbing your mouth to her and having her prematurely agree to the mating. Also, if you force her to take you as her mate, I will fucking rip your throat out. No one will save you from my wrath this time."
Alpha Christian let out a sigh, his emotions a scattered mess. I remembered how difficult it was to hold myself back with Adeline; I knew it wouldn't be any easier for him as an Alpha himself. "I agree. Jaxon, never in a million years did I think your sister would ever be my mate. I have no intention of ever hurting her; hurting her would be like hurting myself. I just want to take this time to get to know her, see if we have anything in common aside from being fated mates. I'm still trying to wrap my head around all of this too. Whenever she's around, I can't think straight. You know, she could also reject me."
I couldn't help but laugh at his confession. "Fuck. I sure hope she does." Alpha Christian's eyes narrowed, his jaw clenching shut.
"Relax. I won't interfere either way," I promised and stood up from my office chair. "Adeline's not feeling well, so I have to go be with my mate. Is there anything else we should discuss?" I asked, my eyebrows furrowing together.
Both men shot to their feet, fear painting their faces. "Adeline? What do you mean?" my Beta Don demanded. He was quickly cut off by Alpha Christian's panicked response, "What's wrong with her? Where's your pack doctor? He should already be with her."
In the blink of an eye, my hand was wrapped around Alpha Christian's neck. One wrong move was all it would take, and I would snap it instantly. I watched the blood leave his face before releasing him to the floor. He held his throat for a moment and coughed loudly as he gasped for air. "W-what is your issue?" he spat out. "I just told you I met my mate." Beta Don stood up, and a laugh escaped his lips, making it clear he didn't care that I could have almost slaughtered Alpha Christian in the middle of my office just then.
"Stay away from my mate," I said with a growl and turned on my heels, leaving my office to search for my mate. I had checked the entire pack house until I finally mind-linked Sophia, who told me they were in the Alpha's Den. I noticed the door was fully open and proceeded inside, only to find that my mate was lying on the couch with nothing but a bra and panties in front of Doctor Raymond. I knew he was a doctor, but the thought became unbearable of another man seeing my mate like that. By the look on Doctor Raymond's face, I could see he understood why I was livid, nervous, and stepping back while I comforted my mate.
My eyes widened, panic flooding my chest when Doctor Raymond informed us that Adeline was in heat. She was so weak, even with the wolfsbane she had injected during her attack, she didn't look this pale. There were two options: complete the mating between us right there or use some medicine Doctor Raymond had suggested that was laced with silver. I didn't care about traditions when it came to my mate's life; she was struggling and hot enough to cause the entire Arctic to melt. Adeline, on the other hand, felt differently. She wanted to preserve the marking for the mating ceremony regardless of how much pain she was in. I knew it was solely to ease the transition with the pack, to help them accept her as Luna.
