Beep. Beep. Beep.

A loud, annoying noise pierced my ears, closely reminding me of an alarm clock. Feeling like I was waking up from the worst hangover I'd ever experienced, I struggled to open my eyes and decided to shift onto my side instead. Five more minutes, I thought as my head pounded hard.

I felt a tug on my arm in surprise, summoning the strength to finally open my eyes. My eyes widened as I stared at the IV needle hooked into my arm, a short breath leaving my chest. I glanced around the room, still processing where I was and what was happening. My gaze locked with an older man, probably in his 50s, standing over me with tousled black hair and wearing a white overcoat.

"Addy!" My panicked voice shrieked as I bolted my head to the other side of the bed. "I'm so happy you're okay. You gave us such a scare!" Sophia said, almost throwing herself onto me in a hug.

Images of a black and white marbled wolf haunted my mind. He had blown through the window—I remembered. He wore a sinister smirk before letting out a growl and leaping toward me. I begged and cried out for help, but no one was coming. It was as if no one could hear me. I fought off the marbled wolf with all my might until the door swung open, and I recognized the wolf as the guard from the cages. I screamed louder, straining my voice in hopes he would help me.

I heard a "click" from the door as he closed it and turned to face me as the marbled wolf ravaged me. He stared for a moment and cocked his head, as if debating whether to help. I thought I had managed to push the wolf off until I felt his sharp canines penetrate my leg.

Alpha Jaxon. Thoughts of Alpha Jaxon muddled my mind as I felt my soul leave my body, slowly losing control. I remembered those rare moments when he smiled. It was as if I could feel his touch caressing my body once again, taking me to another dimension. If these were going to be the last moments of my life, I was glad they were filled with memories of him—my mate.

The guard seemed to be in a full-fledged fight with the marbled wolf by now, but I was quickly losing focus. I vaguely remembered seeing Alpha Jaxon until complete darkness took over me.

The pack doctor picked up a small bottle, carefully pulling out two small blue pills. "Adeline, my name is Doctor Raymond. I'm happy to see you're awake. The bite on your leg is healing quicker than I anticipated. I need you to take these—they'll help prevent the pain," he explained.

My instinct took over, causing my body to bolt upright, and my hand rushed to my leg. I still had a leg, didn't I? My fingertips ran over the nearly invisible stitches, slightly indented. I wasn't sure how I had healed so fast. I had always thought the best part of being a shifter was healing at an unimaginable speed, but even this surprised me.

My wolf abruptly awoke, stirring inside with a fresh, urgent energy begging to barrel through the woods for a run. I wondered how long I had been out. I had woken feeling so refreshed and renewed. I reached out to the doctor to take the small blue pills he insisted I swallow.

"Do I have to take these? I feel fine. Maybe I should wait until I'm actually in pain?" I questioned.

It was no secret that human medicine wasn't the preferred option among shifters, usually metabolizing way too quickly. A mysterious grin formed on Doctor Raymond's face. "You might have no pain at all, but it's not a risk I'm willing to take. Plus, it'll ensure the stitches won't get infected," he said sympathetically.

I really didn't want to take the pills, but I wasn't about to argue with the pack doctor. He placed the two small blue pills in my hand, and with one swift move, I tossed them into the back of my throat.

I felt a comforting presence behind the door and electric sparks ignited within me. I knew Alpha Jaxon was near. As if my wolf knew, I watched as the doorknob twisted open and an exhausted Alpha Jaxon entered. My wolf yelped, "Mate!"

Like clockwork, Sophia stepped back, making room beside the bed for her brother. The pack doctor straightened immediately, locking his eyes onto the floor.

"Everyone out," he ordered in a deep voice that sent shivers down my spine.

Without missing a beat, Jaxon sat beside me on the bed, his eyes examining my body with worry.

"Did the rogue escape?" I quietly asked, disappointed.

He shook his head and pressed his lips deeply in thought. "No. I personally made sure of that. Now tell me, how are you feeling? Are you in pain?"

I raised my hands as high as I could over my head, like an overjoyed child, feeling the IV drip lightly pull against my arm. "I feel amazing! See?" I let out a playful giggle as he raised an eyebrow, his eyes swirling with delightful shades of honey. I adored the way he looked at me; I felt such intensity in his eyes that drove me crazy.

I presumed he had felt the same magnetic pull burning inside me as he leaned forward, brushing his lips lightly against mine.

"You haven't felt what amazing feels like yet, my little mate," he whispered. His hot breath against my mouth trapped me with lust. I gently bit his bottom lip, excitement causing my pulse to quicken at the idea of teasing him. He let out a small, low moan into my mouth, and I whispered back against his lips, "I guess I should find someone to show me."

Losing all control, his hands laced behind my head, pulling me roughly into him as our lips connected. It was as if I had woken from my attack, and what was once a want had become a need for Alpha Jaxon. I let him take control of the kiss, feeling how much he enjoyed it as he pushed further and harder into my mouth. When he finally pulled back, he let out a growl at me, "Mine."

I smirked at his reaction, satisfied that I had succeeded in getting a rise out of him. He kept his hand holding the back of my head while his fingers intertwined in my hair. He stared at me in adoration until he finally said, "You need to get some rest, Adeline. I'll be back shortly with something to eat for you."

My stomach growled at the mention of food. I hadn't realized how hungry I was. I wasn't even sure what the last thing I had eaten was.

Alpha Jaxon stood from the bed and was about to exit when I grabbed his arm. He didn't pull back but turned back toward me with a stunned look on his face.

"Wait, take me for a run," I begged.

He winced, eyes squinting in utter confusion. "You need to take it easy, Adeline. I can't let you out for a run."

I rolled my eyes at him defiantly. "That's why I'm asking YOU to take me. My wolf is stirring to get out. There's so much energy flowing through my body right now. Please, Alpha. It'll help me recover."

I shot him the best puppy eyes I could muster, confident I was going for a run—with or without him.
